I used to do embroidery but don’t have heaps of spare time these days. Here’s some photos of I have been up to with a needle.

I like to lean into the retro aesthetic with vintage teaspoons from obscure places in NZ. I have also amassed a number of enamel pins (they would be my most frequently worn accessory)

The trees are up!

A birch style christmas tree with lights built into the tree it is covered in gold foil. The lights are a warm yellow. It has a range of christmas ornaments on it including: a wooden laser cut star with a Dunedin fur seal inside of it (I got this from Port Chalmers Museum, a wooden yellow kōwhai flower from Abstract Design NZ, a small red felt heart with french knot flowers stitched into it, a small white plaster christmas tree shape that had branches pushed into it while it was still wet and green water colour applied along those lines, a cartoon angel wearing a red green and gold dress, a red blue and gold bird I got from a christmas cracker. an occasional table is underneath my TV. It has on it from left to right: A 30cm wooden cut out christmas tree brushed with gold and photo paint and rubbed back. A felted mouse and felted reindeer sit underneath the tree, they are wearing a knitted jersey and a knitted scarf respectively. There are two vases full of lego flowers. There is a card that says Happy Holidays on the front with an illustration of forest creatures playing musical instruments outside in the snow; the card plays ‘walking in a winter wonderland’. The card is several years old. I keep it for sentimental reasons. Gold tinsel weaves through this arrangement.

We had senior prize giving tonight. I got to wear my regalia. It feels a bit special each time, as I never got to wear it in Autumn 2020.

#Oct23Storm To top the day off, we now have no water at my house. Very low level of water left at the reservoir. Storm related issue at the treatment plant.

CIVIL DEFENCE West Coast Emergency Management • • 6m・ ! POWER OUT - TOP OF THE SOUTH Power is out across multiple areas in the top of the South Island. There is no current ETA for restoration. Severe wind and rain are making it difficult for line crews to locate and repair faults, so this outage may be prolonged. Please note: cell towers will begin to lose power as backup battery systems run down. • Limit cellphone use to text messages only. Keep them small. Avoid voice or video calls to help preserve battery life. Stay safe, stay warm, and check on neighbours where possible. Updates will follow when more information is available. Call 111 if an emergency.

Hokitika and Māwhera indoor rallies have been cancelled due to an extended power outage
NZEI FB group post STRIKE UPDATE 2 HOKITIKA AND GREYMOUTH events are cancelled due to power outage. Please share with other members. PPTA members page(FB post) Calling Grey/Hoki Teachers All strike action in Hokitika and Greymouth is canceled due the West Coast wide power cut. Please contact any union members to let them know. Westpower (FB page post) Westpower supply from the national grid has been lost, resulting in an outage affecting from Inangahua to Greymouth to Gladstone and everything in between. This maybe an extended outages due to the severe winds up north. Thank you for your patience.

This week I had a (copy and paste) reply from the Ministry of Ed ‘Curriculum Refresh Team’ re my concerns about Art History being slashed from the curriculum. Do they really expect us to swallow this?
In the refreshed curriculum, Art History knowledge will not be lost, it will be integrated into specialist art subjects, and other subjects such as History and Classical Studies. This means that students will continue to engage with historical artworks, artists, and cultural movements from both New Zealand and overseas. Within Painting, Design, Photography, and Creative Arts, there will be historical and contextual components so that students learn about art movements and develop critical analysis alongside their practical work. Other subjects will also provide opportunities to study art in context. For example, Classical Studies includes the historical and visual analysis of Greek and Roman art and architecture, and this will remain available for students who wish to pursue those interests. It is important to emphasis the integration of Art History into other subjects is not about diminishing its value. The intention is to ensure that students continue to access this learning in ways that are coherent and sustainable, while also supporting schools to offer a wide range of relevant subjects. For students who want to take their interest further, Art History remains available as a pathway at tertiary level. Universities continue to provide opportunities for study in this discipline, ensuring that students who are passionate about Art History can pursue it in depth. This approach reflects the broader commitment of the curriculum refresh. The aim is to deliver a curriculum that is relevant and responsive, while continuing to honour the subjects that enrich our education system and broaden students' understanding of the world.
