“You look like you didn’t even try to sleep last night.” “And you look like you fell off a lunatic’s treehouse two weeks ago,” Kaveh snapped back, regretting his words as soon as they scratched up a throat still sore from the chilly moisture of the rainforest at night; but he was tired of this conversation. He was tired, in general, as aware as Alhaitham himself that he wouldn’t be able to postpone fixing his neglected sleep schedule for much longer. To get Alhaitham off his case, if nothing else. Before that, however, Kaveh wanted to do one last thing: “Let’s go out for breakfast?” Alhaitham eyed the wheelchair as Kaveh drove it up by the bed. “Do you plan to push me down the street?” Kaveh rolled his eyes. “It’s really tempting.” He headed for the wardrobe and threw both doors open. “Unfortunately, Cyno would have my head before noon.”

“I read a paper, when we were at Pardis Dhyai.” Alhaitham began as Kaveh piled up the empty plates that had been full of fruit to carry them to the kitchen. “According to it, excessive caffeine consumption is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.” Because Kaveh was, unlike somebody else, considerate, he resisted the urge to ask whether Alhaitham had by any chance read any paper that detailed how witnessing an idiot barely survive a twelve metre fall and dreaming of it every night for the following ten days affected one’s health. “I read another one, about economics,” he replied instead. “Well, not a paper, but a picture book. “It says it’s hard to make money while you sleep.” Alhaitham passed him his empty glass. “Not as hard as it would be from the grave.”

“I am Officer Blathine,” the melusine introduced herself. “Sir, is that object yours?” “Mehrak?” Kaveh was used to getting questions about it, as it was one of the few autonomous mechanisms in Sumeru that posed no danger; he hadn’t expected it to be the case in Fontaine, whose regulations regarding automatons were clearly a lot laxer than the Akademiya’s. “Yes, I built it. Why?” Officer Blathine’s ears—at least, Kaveh thought they were ears, as he saw nothing else she might use to detect sounds and they reminded him of Tighnari’s—drooped in something he could only describe as exasperation. “You are under arrest.”

Unfortunately, Dori did not trust Alhaitham enough to do business with him, much less to chat about the architect she had commissioned to build her a mansion. He only managed to track some of the construction workers involved and coax one of them into drinking enough to quell his misgivings about sharing details of a process his employer had made everyone sign an agreement to keep confidential. The man explained that the construction of the Palace had been a rockier affair than Dori let on. That it had been done twice, because the first attempt wound up crumbling to rubble when the Withering devastated the area overnight and Lord Sangemah Bay was about to abandon the project in a fury; but Kaveh persuaded her to give it another chance. While Alhaitham appreciated the information, it hardly clarified anything— in fact, it only made the matter more baffling. Kaveh should have been over the moon, but all evidence hinted at the opposite.
