I really don't like systems that force libraries to pay-per-use and I wish libraries themselves were more upfront with users about how much every movie you take out from Hoopla or Kanopy is costing the library.

Sweet home Chicago
Chicago is having none of this administration's BS.

Officials in Tennessee aren't just banning books, they're now demanding information on who checked out contested (largely LGBTQ+) books, including names, addresses, and "household composition."

A librarian who was given the directive has come forward asking for whistleblower protections.

A First Amendment expert told The Advocate that there are "huge" legal implications stemming from the situation.

Making an effective records retention schedule without a process catalog is impossible. Please never forget that first step.

And this is why my Swiss-Austrian husband and I won’t be visiting the US for the foreseeable future.

A little known part of the job of being an archivist: sometimes you have to impromptu shift several moving boxes full of paper, weighing several kilos around. Ambush arm day.

A note to all: please convert your digital records into archivable (archivtaugliche) formats as soon as their active phase comes to an end. Do not make your friendly archivist appraise digital reams of wingdings.

Writing a new records management training and am realizing it cannot be stressed enough to public servants that if they don’t manage their records correctly, we fail as a transparent democracy. Managing records correctly is the surest way of ensuring accountability. It isn’t just your everyday job.

I’m in a situation now where I and other colleagues are refusing to act as leadership coaches for our boss. We don’t get paid for that.

Also, don’t spray perfume/cologne in the office. Were you raised by wolves?

Artistic representations of St. Catherine’s mystical marriage to Jesus will never not be funny. They literally all show some lady marrying a baby. And Mary is just there holding Jesus with an expression that says “Seems legit.”

Anger and frustration seem to unlock hidden linguistic talents in me. I can’t speak French in a normal conversation, but I can effectively yell at a lady who is having her five year old open the train door that he isn’t capable of opening as a treat.

On possible the least Swiss train SBB has to offer. Walked down 7 cars with WCs out of order before finding before finding the only working one where I was 5th in line. If the train hits a delay, the train is officially Deutsche Bahn in disguise.

Lausanne marathon complete. Surprisingly hilly, blasted by strong winds in my face at ~KM23-sh for a few kilometers making it difficult to move forward, which is kind of the whole point of the thing. But overall, new personal best by 29 minutes. Wanted to be faster but can’t complain. Bragging done.

The fact that “Data”, “Information”, and “Records” are terms with such flexible and opaque definitions may ultimately be what keeps me steadily employed.

🧵It has been clear for years that a key difference between past instances of book banning and the present censorship cataclysm is that the banning happening now targets not only books, but librarianship as a profession and libraries as an institution. 1/4

Apparently two youths outside the fireworks store asked my late-30s husband to pretend to be their dad so they could buy fireworks. The sulk and existential crisis currently happening in my apartment is epic.

I just saw an amazing film at the Zürich Film Festival: “The Librarians”, about the concerted and conspiratorial efforts in the US to impose white Christian nationalism in public schools and the courageous librarians in the vanguard fighting against it.

Everyone go see it.
