Today, a broad coalition of scientific professional societies who represent over 92,000 scientists are speaking out against the politicization and demonization of Federally funded science and government scientist jobs.

It was an honor to help the Union of Concerned Scientists with this! 🧪🌎

My lab has done studies showing that sex biased host responses determine disease outcome during Ebola virus, MERS-CoV, & SARS-CoV-2 infection across species.

Sex is a biological variable. Failure to account for that in viral pathogenesis experiments is just bad science.

I want to see every scientific society going into emergency mode. This is a good example of how an organization can flex its specific power in a time of great need. What else is possible?
The AMS is temporarily opening its career services to all who need them, regardless of membership status, and offering dues waivers and meeting registration fee reductions for those impacted by job loss due to changes in the government.

Last week, a video of a rare black seadevil anglerfish spotted near the ocean surface made headlines because anglerfish typically live in very deep waters.

Dr. @sternarchella.bsky.social joins us to discuss the video and recent research on anglerfish evolution.
Why The Internet Was Captivated By A Hideous Fish
A video of a gloriously creepy anglerfish inspired tears and poetry online. But why was this deep-sea dweller near the surface at all?

Biologists, we have a duty to push back on this.
HHS will announce a new anti-trans campaign today, per three people familiar with pending announcement.

The health department will tout Trump’s executive orders on transgender issues, assert that sex is binary and focus on participation in women’s sports.

Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said “wow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

Many people from the #USDA were terminated yesterday/today. A place where agricultural research is done to support agricultural production. Scientists, research assistants, custodians.

This is unacceptable.

Fun facts: The dangers of raw pet food ruined an otherwise pleasant date for me once many moons ago.
She insisted that raw white meat was safe* and that I was a shill for Big Pet Food.
Ma’am, I’m a pathologist. I diagnose the diseases you cause.

*It’s both unsafe and an unbalanced diet
Some more info about another group of cats infected with H5N1 via raw food, in this case from Monarch Raw Pet Food. This episode is notable because the manufacturer accepts no responsibility, and provides a good example of the nonsense that veterinarians deal with from a lot of these companies. 1/11

They’re firing NIH scientists and replacing them with people with this level of crappy chart-making?

Sounds like the DOGE kids would benefit from going through the NIH postbac program. 🧪
not sure what's worse about the DOGE site: unsecured databases, leaking of classified information, or these chart crimes
