🔍 Persian Gulf and its Discontents

Abu Dhabi may be committed to the Abraham Accords, mainly due to the political immunity it perceives the deal to provide. Its involvement in the Sudan genocide is increasingly becoming a PR catastrophe that could test the utility of the accords. Domestically, however, the messaging has changed.

Amused by the change in UAE’s domestic propaganda. Nothing tells me enthusiasm for the Abraham Accords have waned like the podcast episodes they keep churning out.

Host: Describe the Jewish character.

Usama al-Shadhili: It is one of perpetual victimhood, and perpetual whining.

Khazal Al Majidi tells Emirati Jamal Al Mulla that Israel wants to take over the entire Middle East and rule over the Arab world; ‘it wants to enslave us.’

The UAE is changing its tone on Israel altogether. Popular podcaster hosts an Iraqi historian who disputes that the Jewish homeland is tied to Palestine. He argues that there’s no archeological evidence to Moses and his people having supposedly lived in Egypt either.

That’s where we’re at now.

The UAE's preferred partner in covert apartheid. Regime change in Israel is something the UAE has been calling for and working towards for a while now.

Gulf states believe they are the rational bloc that can lead the region towards de-escalation and economic prosperity.

They view Europe as an ailing, incoherent old man, who urgently needs a moral successor.

Anwar Gargash today.

But then you get a phone call.

There’s nothing the UAE would love more than regime change in Israel.

Barak Ravid reposting a terrorist joke is no surprise. The number of Israelis I’ve met who think this is funny is astonishing. The surprising bit is that the wise ones amongst them don’t seem to provide any charitable public relations tips to these wackos.

You’d think Ravid would know better.

UAE’s Former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (‘former’ doesn’t mean much in this context) Anwar Gargash expresses the deep anxieties gripping the Gulf at the moment.

Any analyst who says the UAE or Gulf states are in on Israel’s war against Iran is not worth their fee.

I agree, but I find an official handle posting this a little strange.

This may or may not be related to the oil tanker ‘collision’ of this morning, but the UAE Foreign Ministry just released a statement saying that regional and international mobilisation is necessary for de-escalation.

I am worried.

This is something I imagine an unelected dictator would say. At least we don’t vote for those who hold us in such contempt.

Emirati analyst, Mohammed Baharoon, on how Israel’s callousness is perceived:

“The Shiites are historically willing to suffer.”

I’m not sure our Shia brethren necessarily agree.

There’s a trend on TikTok of Khaleejis using a sound of a Persian-speaking lady to post videos of themselves supposedly calling to check in on relatives in Iran.

For the record, UAE’s Anwar Gargash is not only Ajam, his mother and his wife are both Iranian.

Oman’s Foreign Minister is the first Gulf official to make a statement on the Israeli attack against Iran. Saudi FM jumped on a call with his Iranian counterpart.

Kuwait has followed with a standard condemnation. Noteworthy, Kuwait denied yesterday that the US embassy there was evacuating or downgrading its mission.
