While I'd say the quality of 13s cast varies, I am of the opinion that each character was basically written to act exactly as a person like them would act. For most of 13s party the start of the game is the worst day of their lives, but for Hope we actually get to see how its his worst day from the get-go unlike with the rest of the party being a slow unveiling, Hope is also the one who, while he is brooding about Snow, is very vocal about his anguish regarding becoming a LCie and doesn't ever really hide the fact that hes quickly falling off the deep end and is real close to crashing out. Meanwhile the other party members are either silent, in denial, or choosing to look at their state as a boon. There are many other reasons that I love Hope, but for me my most immediate reason is that he's the one who makes it clear that there are actual stakes in the game despite what the rest of the party would make you think.
