Don't know about fifty years but go back a little longer and yeah, A LOT worse everywhere and that's when the stereotype of British teeth being particularly bad formed.

No one knows what politics will be like without Donald Trump, olds like me just remember what it used to be like but will not become again after he's croaked.
Given how easy it used to be to enter the US clandestinely in the 20th century and live a life of peace there, and how hard it has become in the last few decades, I would assume most of the actual 'illegals' (as opposed to people whose status the admin has revoked) are getting on in years.
