Just increasingly elaborate reasons why the predator has to kill a human (as bait, needs DNA for something, can't figure out how to even out his trophy room, irrationally afraid of flat teeth, his buddy swapped the non-lethal and lethal settings as a prank, and finally he slips on a banana peel)

To me its an example of a highly specific meaning being overwritten by a more general one, largely because the specific word sounds more high falutin. Give this old man some yard to keep the kids off, basically.
