Please do not automatically add authors who haven’t publicly disclosed if they are trans to ‘Books By Trans Authors’ lists, just because their MC is trans. Always ask an author for permission if you aren’t sure whether you can feature them as a trans author! Another alternative, is making posts/book lists based off rep or tropes instead, e.g: Fantasy Books with Trans MCs Trans Romances Favorite reads with Trans MCs! Cute books with Trans Joy! Trans and queer authors should be free to write and publish their books without fear of their identity being questioned. Being out is a very personal choice—some authors might not feel ready to come out, might not be in a safe position to do so, or simply might not want to be, and that’s okay, we shouldn’t ask authors to give up their boundaries just to tell their stories. Many closeted trans authors are afraid of publishing their books because they don’t want to be outed, but we need trans books now more than ever, we must make this a safe space for all trans authors—whether they are out or not—so that everyone can feel comfortable sharing their stories, on their own terms.
