Today the lunch at #BES2024 wasn't fully vegetarian! I guess biodiversity is good?

Do you want to know more about landscape diversity and functioning? Listen what Simon says! He is known to all of us at #BES2024 from the conference app leader board!

Bastien Parisy explores the complex communities of plants and fungi in the Arctic. There are major rewiring of interactions and the community structure is partly explained by environmental variation. Still, most of the realised interactions are difficult to predict. #BES2024

Noémie Pichon from @wslbiodiversity.bsky.social explores plant community changes in protected areas of Switzerland. The amount of specialists and warm-adapted species is increasing, nitrogen-hungry species are decreasing. #BES2024

Ulla Riihimäki shows the non-target effects of fungicides on butterflies. Fungicides were increasing the larval mortality, decreasing growth rate. @marjosaastamoinen.bsky.social #BES2024

Emanuel Kopp works on applying ecological theory on competition to increase crop yield of soy beans. Very cool, applied and important! Go and chat with him at his poster! #BES2024

These lizard orchids, Himantoglossum hircinum, were among my most wanted plants to see in Switzerland. I was lucky enough to locate a spot with tens of individuals in bloom! Simply otherworldly!👽

Pulsatillas are among the first flowers in the Alps and emerge quickly after the snowmelt. These ones were out in April, at lower sites the onset is already in March. This year we had an unexpected snowfall in September so warm weather in October tricked some individuals to bloom!🤯

Look at those colors! This was definitely one of the highlights of my field season! Spotting Rosalia alpina feels always special and doesn't happen every year. This was the third individual I have seen on study area, Calanda, Switzerland.

I still haven't quite figured out how this longhorn (Arhopalus rusticus) got itself stuck in a single grass! I guess it was a flight accident. Or a new species of insectivorous plants in development. The beetle was dangling motionless mid air and but after a rescue operation it seemed just fine.
