I like writing, books, music, travelling, nature and democracy. From the Canadian prairies.
I was needing some writing inspiration today, and Tom Waits delivered.

I just received the most recent issue of the @southwestreview.bsky.social in the mail, along with these very cool Barry Gifford playing cards.

I found one more photo for this thread about my great-grandparents house. There is a broken window in the attic and vultures sometimes enter the house through there. Here’s a super creepy pic of a young turkey vulture. #abandonedhouse

Ok one more for this year,

LOWDOWN ROAD, by Scott Von Doviak - This book was wild and a just lot of fun. I also read CHARLESGATE CONFIDENTIAL by Von Doviak this year, and would highly recommend as well.

OF CATTLE AND MEN, by Ana Paula Maia - I enjoyed this novel about cattle at a slaughterhouse rebelling. Although be warned, you may not look at your burger the same way again.

YOU DREAMED OF EMPIRES, by Alvaro Enrigue - An alternative history where Moctezuma defeats the Spaniards, lead by Cortes, at what is today Mexico City. Really interesting details of life at the centre of the Aztec Empire and of what might have been had history unfolded differently.

MEXICANS ON THE MOON, by Pedro Iniguez - The poems in this collection are a blend of Mexican folklore and sci-fi and are very relevant to the times we live in. The best book of poetry I’ve read in a while.

SILVER NITRATE, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia -This suspense novel involves a mysterious lost film and a Nazi occultist (there are few things I find as creepy as Nazi occultists. Likely due to the number of times I watched Indiana Jones as a child). My fav Moreno-Garcia novel (I’ve read a few)

A COLLAPSE OF HORSES, by Brian Evenson - Evenson is a master of short fiction horror. I don’t know why it took me so long to discover him.

EYES OF THE RIGEL, by Roy Jacobsen- This is the third book in a series that follows the life of Ingrid Barroy, who lives on a farm on an island in northern Norway. This one is set in the aftermath of WWII as Ingrid treks through northern Sweden in search of the father of her baby girl…

JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORRELL (audiobook), by Susanna Clarke - I read this about 20 years ago, loved it and decided it was time to give it another read/listen. I have found the novel’s leisurely pace to be perfect for the audiobook format. Still one of my all time favourites.

BAD CREE, by Jessica Johns - I loved this horror novel that combined indigenous folklore, culture and the challenges that come with being a member of a family that shares a history of trauma. And it was truly frightening in the best sort of way.

HOUSE OF BONE AND RAIN, by Gabino Iglesias - I always like stories about best buddies, and above all this book is about friendship. But it’s also about vengeance and monsters and there is some pretty cool cosmic horror here too.

THE MOUNTAIN IN THE SEA, by Ray Nayler - I bought this book because I am fascinated by octopuses and because I liked the cover. But what makes this novel great (and so tragic) is that it’s really about how humans can behave so destructively and how that never seems to change.

One of my best finds in music this year has been Paul Cauthen. I’ve gone through a few of his albums and have really been enjoying this one the past few days. If you haven’t heard him before, I would describe his music as a mix of outlaw country and gospel. /1

Someday I think I’ll move a table and chair in there and write a story about a haunted house.
November 24, 2024 at 12:29 AM
The house is mostly out of view as the yard is now overgrown with trees. This picture is taken from a nearby field. You can see the roof of the house to the right of the barn.

Since I like old abandoned houses, I thought I’d share a few pictures of my great grandparents’ house. It was built around 1940 and abandoned about 10 years later. It has been vacant for over 70 years.

THE WOOD AT MIDWINTER - 20 years after Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Susanna Clarke is back in the same universe with this short, odd, whimsical book. It also has illustrations (I love books with illustrations. I wish more had them). I liked it.

Album of the day: OUR TIME IN THE SUN by Jeremie Albino. It’s hard to pin down the genre of Albino’s music. Is it rock? Soul? Country? It’s all of that and it’s 100% awesome.
