Slowly doing the UHI Viking MLitt, finding switching from science hard (what used to be ignored as anecdotal is now a primary source?!?). Mostly worked on statistical analyses in ecology (marine mammals) and health. Need a dissertation topic and a new job.
Thanks @stoutstoat.co.uk, carvedinstone is thought-provoking. The Pumbric shoes have got stuck in my head. I can see modern language teachers resisting loanwords, but is there evidence of medieval parents defending the linguistic purity of Pictish? It's a nice image: I'd like to believe it possible.

Could fránstalls (Orkneyinga ch 81 Rv Lv 6) be a kenning for silk? skaldic has: of house of shining > snake's house > gold. But > of the silkworm's cocoon > of silk seems natural. For a hat. It's before Rǫgnvaldr's pilgrimage, but he innovated and Europeans learned how silk was made much earlier.
