Ecology and policy nerd here to spread environmental knowledge! Really enjoy posting about government activity, laws, and regulations; threatened and endangered species; freshwater mussels; wetlands; and New Jersey!
If you feel helpless with the constant destruction (including to the environment), here’s something you can actually do. SHOW UP AND/OR SPREAD THE WORD.

I know you’re tired…but NEVER GIVE UP!

Some good news this week…sorry if you had a koala condom business plan though 😂

I have a friend who was shocked to learn that beaches in New Jersey and other places receive sand for replenishment and how, if that didn’t occur, many would probably be gone. Lots of studies and opinions out there about it all, including about effects to the environment.

When listening to the news and shady folks are speaking, remember that: Anger and righteousness combined is how liars attempt to hide their lies. Don’t fall for it.

I wish there was good news to share, but things are bad for those who conserve/protect the environment and all those who care 😞. So many offices are being closed throughout the USGS, USFWS, NPS. No one knows where they will go and they are just blindly removing. #environment

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is critically important for protecting the environment and all those who depend upon it (including humans)! This is a great read and awesome that their previous director is speaking out.

Trump’s job cuts at this overlooked agency put every American at risk
A “wholesale decimation of expertise” threatens the natural resources we all rely on, a former top government official tells Vox.

Government conservation organizations (e.g., USFWS, USGS, NPS) were cruelly targeted. Thousands of federal employees terminated. This will REDUCE EFFICIENCY and harm the environment. Reach out to your congressional representatives, agency contacts, and protest to express your concerns. #Resist

Section 5 of the “energy emergency” executive order requires emergency Endangered Species Act procedures for those projects! If someone wants to build a new coal mine, they can basically do so without initial review by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect threatened and endangered species!

NOAA manages large ocean fisheries in US waters. Scientists there conduct surveys, sample fish, and run complex models to estimate the levels of sustainable catches. NOAA is recognized as a world leader in creating jobs, producing food, and avoiding overfishing. Kudos to NOAA fisheries!!!!

Times are tough for protecting the environment. When folks try to pass the false narrative that the Trump administration is what the people wanted, CORRECT THEM! Approximately 68.4% of voter eligible Americans did not vote for Trump! American’s overwhelmingly did not want him.

It’s been a whirlwind of changes for U.S. environmental law and policy with the change of administration. Some major ones include the following executive orders:

- Revoking Federal Actions to Address Environmental Justice in Minority Populations and Low-Income Populations required since 1994.

Section 7(a)(1) of the Endangered Species Act directs all Federal agencies to carry out programs within their authorities to advance the recovery of endangered and threatened species! 7a1 plans are rarely developed though! The conservation conscious public may want to demand this from the feds!

Interesting report evaluating sedimentation impacts to freshwater mussels! Construction related watercourse sedimentation may travel over 3000 meters downstream, depending on the situation! Makes a great case for using soil erosion and sediment controls!

Good news for the bald eagle and #osprey in New Jersey being taken off the state endangered species list! 🎊 Just a reminder that recovery to eventually remove them from the list was always the goal! Protections still exist from the federal #BGEPA and #MBTA.

Corrupt politicians and mess ups usually catch public attention when it comes to government environmental activities/laws. However, most of the amazing work that non-political employees conduct everyday is ignored! Their work makes the world a better place!

Did you know that the U.S federal government works to conserve wetlands and waters everyday?! 🌊 A great example is through Section 404 of the Clean Water Act! The public also gets a chance to comment on some permits that may be issued!

Interested in being more involved with government activities? Then you should be aware of the National Environmental Policy Act! It requires analysis of the impacts actions will have on the environment and ways to address them. It also requires public review and comment for some actions!

Love the earths critters and plants? Then will be glad to know about Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act! Section 7 requires the U.S. federal government to consult on actions that affect and provide measures to conserve federally threatened and endangered species!
