Not every day you have to rescue a feral #kitten from a ditch, but the poor thing was trapped under a heap of chaff and crying out for help.

Took a little while to get the burrs and brambles off, but he's right as rain now and back home with his litter.

#Protip: whenever you are stumped while doing any kind of analysis, stop and deliberately take stock of what you know and what you don't.

It is helpful to approach the problem like you're putting together a puzzle but you don't have all the pieces, and you don't...

"Dad, what movie should we watch today?"

There are many good answers to that question, and then there are great ones⬇️

What a wonderful & moving gift. A dear friend & former colleague of mine translated my entire book, "Negotiate: A Primer for Practitioners" into #Korean.

He's also given me permission to share the digital version of the translation online, which I look forward to doing soon!

History, folks.

The moment when #Japan's Lower House announced its selection of the country's first female prime minister, Sanae #Takaichi⬇️

Big news in Japanese politics today: the #Komeito has decided to leave its coalition with the #LDP--a coalition that formed way back in 1999.

Humbled to have received a first-of-its-kind award from the NZ Defence Force Commander of Joint Forces. As I remarked during the ceremony, I am grateful to #NewZealand for its continued contributions to the Korean Peninsula. It's been an honor serving alongside my Kiwi teammates.

There it is: #Japan is set to have its first-ever female prime minister as Sanae #Takaichi defeats Shinjiro #Koizumi in the #LDP presidential election.

The LDP will seek to elect her as the country's new prime minister during an extraordinary Diet session soon.

#WeekendReading
Really looking forward to reading "No Names, No Pack Drill" by Steve MacBeth. It's been 13 years since my last deployment to #Afghanistan, and I can't think of a more effective way of revisiting my own memories of my time there than through this oral history.

Nothing like getting to spend Labor Day weekend introducing my son to one of my favorite shows when I was his age: #Dragonball (in the original Japanese, of course!)

Anybody else got a show they have shown/will show the next generation?

"Negotiate: A Primer for Practitioners" turned 3 this week.

It is my favorite thing I've ever written, and I still reference it often for my current #negotiation efforts.

I'm also proud that I published it with YCAPS to make it as accessible as possible.

#Negotiation is a long & complex process, which is why it is important for practitioners to understand the six different phases.

Making good deals requires an ability to navigate the challenges of all six of those phases, which is doubly important when the stakes relate to war.

What began on 16 May in #Istanbul was the start of phase 2: the "Agreement to Negotiate" phase. While they secured another negotiated prisoner exchange (the 65th since March 2022), they also started deliberating the contours of their formal #ceasefire negotiations.
May 28, 2025 at 11:54 AM
The #prenegotiation phase began in earnest with the push from the #US government to jumpstart #ceasefire negotiations, including the meetings in #Jeddah with both the #Ukraine & #Russia sides and the US-Ukraine negotiations over the Minerals Deal.

There are six distinct phases of negotiation, each with their own characteristics and objectives.

There are six phases of #negotiation, and the #Russia & #Ukraine sides are currently in the "Agreement to Negotiate" phase of their #ceasefire deliberations.

Allow me to explain...

Had a chance to brief the members of the Australian War College today. This has become somewhat of an annual tradition for me, and I always enjoy it.

The Defence and Strategic Studies Course always has such a sharp & capable multinational cohort!

There'll be high expectations for the #Russia-#Ukraine negotiations that seem set to occur in #Istanbul on 15 May.

But overly high expectations can kill momentum--the natural inclination when they aren't met is to conclude that the other side is acting in bad faith.

What does this all mean?

• I suspect that negotiations in #Türkiye will happen. The last time negotiators from #Russia & #Ukraine met in-person was in Istanbul in March 2022.
May 11, 2025 at 12:21 PM
#Putin then came out and said that #Russia is ready to begin #ceasefire negotiations on 15 May in #Istanbul. He claimed that #Ukraine violated Russia's previous limited ceasefire arrangements before stating that Russia desires a long-term peace agreement.
May 11, 2025 at 12:21 PM
#Zelensky called for #Russia to accept a comprehensive 30-day #ceasefire.

• Leaders of the "Coalition of the Willing" went #Kyiv and issued a joint statement also calling for a 30-day ceasefire starting 12 May and asserting that more sanctions will come if Russia refuses.
May 11, 2025 at 12:21 PM
A quick recap:
#Putin declared a 3-day #ceasefire during Moscow's Victory Day celebrations.

What should we make of the recent developments between #Russia & #Ukraine and a potential #ceasefire #negotiation?

I'll take a stab at it.
