I see myself as a neo-platonic pantheist. The physical universe is at bottom a mathematical structure, residing in a universal Mind, which may also be called God or the One. This Mind is a rational agent with a value-actualizing intention, actualizing all worlds that are better to exist than not.

It's out! We describe probable reptile tracks from the earliest Carboniferous of Australia. This pushes the amniote record back by some 35-40 million years and implies that the tetrapod crown group originated deep in the Late Devonian. The paper is Open Access. 🧪

I'm aiming to get some thoughtful biologists together (there's no lack of them!) to discuss what kind of narratives might best reflect the nature of their field in the 21st century. Here's a preview of the goals; I'm excited and optimistic about it.

On the relative weakness of atheist arguments:

"Within Western philosophy, atheism has moved too quickly from a blasphemy that dare not speak its name to a dominant worldview that need offer no defense."

Non-materialist atheists definitely exist. Just take David Chalmers. He's working on a non-materialist alternative to theism to explain phenomenal consciousness. Is that alternative also going to be able to explain fine-tuning or the origin of life? I doubt it.
