Let me say this, as a Chicagoan who has seen and chased CBP around my neighborhood: Half the time I'm sympathetic to this perspective. The other half of the time I'm picturing a hot war between state cops and the feds, also in my neighborhood.

I mean, I'm kind of a schmuck for Pritzker, although I supported his challenger, current Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, in the primary. Pritzker last week signed the Illinois Bivens Act which ostensibly allows an Illinois state civil action against federal officers. Will it get struck down, maybe?

I DO agree with this, and it's where I get torn. The notion, for instance, that state and local police should, in fact, police the feds who break state or local laws seems legit, but it also, in the face of the force of the feds, seems an invitation to spiraling violence, as opposed to less violence

I get allowing folks to directly confront the feds is the point of protest, but it also subjects folks to much more physical risk than dealing with your ordinary, run-of-the-mill bastards. Arguably more people are willing to protest if they feel they're less likely to get teargassed.

having local or state police be the people directly next to the folks protesting is probably superior to having ICE/CBP do it. I'm as ACAB as the next man, but an actual trained cop as opposed to a new-recruit thug is less likely to tear gas someone just for the fuck of it.
