Educated as a scientist and attorney, now just a well-informed spectator. Gay, environmentalist, atheist, liberal. I am an active home chef, read science fiction, science non-fiction, and history. Also a bird-watcher and amateur naturalist. In NYC
I made a new for me side dish for dinner with leftovers. It’s brussel sprouts with apples and bacon. I halved the amount of bacon because I find recipes like this too much bacon competes with rather than complements the brussel sprouts. Recipe below. 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

My latest audiobook. It’s a full history of the relations of European colonists & Native Americans. It highlights Native Americans’ central role in early U.S. history & egregious treatment they received at the hands of Europeans & the US. Thanks @bklynlibrary.bsky.social for the loan #booksky #BPL

The my new recipe for dinner was buttered spaetzle. The bratwurst, mustard & sauerkraut were leftovers. Spaetzle can be tricky to make, dropping small pieces of wet dough or batter into boiling water. I crashed & burned on my first attempt but I tried again. Recipe below 1/2 🍜🍽️ #foodsky #cooking

I was back at Simons for another science presentation. This one was about exploring life in the lightless areas of the deep oceans with a marine biologist who has been on hundreds of deep dives. She made a lure to find giant squids! Thanks to the @simonsfoundation.org for the talk. #science

I’m coming close to ending my Oktoberfest them, but I’m not quite there. This is Hungarian-style bratwurst, rotkraut & baked German potato salad. The bratwurst is more like a smoked sausage than the usual pale, soft pork sausage. Recipes below. 1/3 🍜🍽️ #foodsky #cooking

I was back at the American Museum of Natural History’s SciCafe, a monthly informal lecture series with drinks available. This one was about bats, in particular biodiversity in the Caribbean Islands. Before the lecture starts trivia questions are posted, the answer is false. #AMNH #SciCafe

I stopped off & enjoyed the beautiful weather in Prospect Park after l picked up a book (an actual physical print book) I had on hold at the Brooklyn Public Library. I started reading Never Whistle at Night. Thank @bklynlibrary.bsky.social for the loan. #BPL #booksky

My latest audiobook. It’s a wide ranging book & admits nutrition isn’t rocket science, it’s harder. It starts with biology then how the dominance of unhealthy food is a result of market manipulation that taps into human physiology & modern culture. Thanks #NYPL for the loan. #booksky #nutrition

Lunch was a sheet-pan meal. Bratwurst, potatoes & onions are baked together in one pan. I like one-pot meals for the convenience & I should explore sheet-pan dinners more. With that I made some horseradish beer mustard. Recipes below. 1/3 #foodsky #cooking

I made a slightly past season Oktoberfest meal. Bratwurst cooked in an air fryer, sauerkraut with apples & maple-glazed red cabbage. The precooked brats brown nicely in an air fryer. The kraut is cooked with bacon & apples. The cabbage is baked. Recipes below 1/3 🍜🍽️ #foodsky #cooking

My latest read. It pulls back the covers from how the social media-influencer-algorithm triangle works & how people manipulate it. The author tells her story as a professional researching it & as a person being targeted by it. The current system incentivizes sensationalism & outrage 1/2 #booksky

I’ve been wanting to eat less meat to get some balance. Earlier this year I ate a lot more meat & less vegetables than I typically do. I had half a jar of harissa sitting lonesome it my refrigerator then saw a recipe for harissa roasted potatoes. Recipe below 1/2 🍜🍽️ #foodsky #cooking

If I have some extra bakery-quality bread that’s about to go, or already is, stale. I make breadcrumbs with it. I was looking for recipe to use them & I found this, spaghetti with walnuts & breadcrumbs. It’s a good weeknight meal. Recipe below 1/2 🍜🍽️ #foodsky #cooking

My latest read. If the picture looks familiar it’s Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas. She is the main character, unlike the movie. The story was about her overcoming challenges to become a hero & in the process finding herself. Thanks Queen Public Library @qplnyc.bsky.social #booksky

I had some extra red cabbage & after looking for ideas, I found this recipe. It’s simplified Greek cabbage rice, with fewer ingredients & red cabbage instead of green. The recipe called for black rice & that would have been a visually striking side dish for Halloween. 1/2 Recipe below 🍜🍽️ #foodsky

I was back at the New York Public Library, in the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL) building which library employees call ‘snuffles’. This was the third part of their series on AI. This one focused on the potential using AI for the public good but accepted it currently isn’t. #NYPL

I get campaign texts from various sources & usually don’t care but this one annoyed me. My civic duty DOES NOT include getting behind Cuomo, the guy who got $5 million for ‘consulting’ just before he decided to run for mayor but uses tax-payer money for his sexual harassment lawyers. #cuomosucks

I went to another talk at the New York Public Library. This was an author, Ray Madoff (a woman) an expert in tax law with a comedian who was an accountant. The theme of the book (The Second Estate) was how the ultra wealthy rig the system to not pay taxes, but it was entertaining. #NYPL #booksky

I arrived early for an event at the New York Public Library, so I walked around the Bryant Park winter village. I took a minute to watch the ice skating rink in between checking out the food vendors. #bryantpark

I was back at the New York Public Library tonight, not for a lecture, for a Halloween party! This is a bit of the customer contest. Tim Gunn was the guest of honor & a costume judge. He spoke a bit but I couldn’t hear him because too many people in the audience were talking. #NYPL #spookyseason

I was back at the American Museum of Natural History @amnh.org again last night. This was a climate change panel chaired by Chelsea Clinton. The focus was on climate science and solutions education, especially for young people. #AMNH #climate

I went to members night at the American Museum of Natural History @amnh.org When I go I take advantage of the sparse attendance to draw the exhibits. I drew this puma in the North American Mammals Hall. Capturing the musculature right was a challenge, but a fun one. #AMMH #drawing #amatureart

On the line going into the @amnh.org
I was in front of the Guilder Center entrance. It always looked vaguely familiar to me, then it hit me: it reminded of the buildings in the 1968 Planet of the Apes movie. Both were inspired by the style of architect Antoni Gaudi! #AMNH #architecture
