Educated as a scientist and attorney, now just a well-informed spectator. Gay, environmentalist, atheist, liberal. I am an active home chef, read science fiction, science non-fiction, and history. Also a bird-watcher and amateur naturalist. In NYC
I made a take on pestosino calabrese. It uses dried & jarred peppers with sun-dried tomatoes to be a pantry-friendly recipe. They recommended serving it with a dollop of ricotta cheese to contrast with the strong sauce. Recipe below. 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

The other type of cooking I should do more is baking, especially bread. These are yeasted dill rolls. They took time to rise but otherwise didn’t require a lot of effort. I should make flatbreads which are even easier. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

Dinner was things I don’t usually cook but should cook more often. One is soup & this is potato soup. By itself it was a bit bland, but when the bacon is put back & topped with chives & shredded cheddar it’s very tasty. Recipe below 2/2 #foodsky #cooking

My latest audiobook. It’s a sprawling narrative about a sprawling topic. The author gives focus to the various issues around the global oceans by telling the stories of the people involved. The people being abused at sea was eye opening. Thanks @bklynlibrary.bsky.social for the loan. #BPL #booksky

Today I made balilah. It’s a middle eastern dish that varies from region to region. It’s seasoned chickpeas that are cooked until soft, partially mashed, then mixed with spices, lemon juice & olive oil. I kept it basic & had it with a side of bok choy. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

Patagonia hosted a film screening. This was the story of a scientist in India who researched sea turtles. It was part of an upcoming nature film festival, Reel Wild, that was started by the Wildlife Conservation Society @wcs.org which also operates the Bronx Zoo & Coney Island Aquarium. #WCS

Lunch was Hungarian style shepard’s stew with sausage & potatoes. It’s a take on Hungarian kemenytarhony but uses ingredients more common in the U.S. the red color is from paprika and a paste made from jarred roasted red peppers. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

Dinner was murgh chole, a South Asian (Punjabi) chicken & chickpea curry. It was easy to put together & pleasantly spicy. My cooking is like me reading a Wikipedia article. I start with one article or recipe then read or cook at the ones linked or related to it. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

I made an eclectic dinner: chicken au poirve, honey mustard potato salad & steam baby bok choy dressed with a touch of toasted sesame oil. I steamed the bok choy by microwaving it in a covered bowl with a splash of water for a minute. Recipes below 1/3 #foodsky #cooking

My latest audiobook. The author exposes evangelicalism as a faith/culture/political movement & mostly white. They perceive or fabricate threats that justify militant masculinity as both biblical & desirable. This submission to powerful men explains their support of trump. Thanks #NYPL #booksky

I went to another book talk at the New York Public Library. This one was another history book, the second book in a soon to be completed trilogy. The author made interesting points that some accepted stories about US history were not accurate & knowing the true story is important. #booksky #NYPL

I made this one-pan lemon dill chicken & served it over noodle & with green beans. I should make a side of vegetables, just heating some frozen ones, for each meal to balance the meat & starch I eat. Recipe below. 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

Today’s main dish was a version of Chinese-American takeout orange chicken. I can’t recall the last time I’ve had it from a restaurant. I get Chinese delivery often, both American style & authentic Chinese, but never orange chicken. Recipe below. 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

I found a new vegetable at an Asian market. This is ong choy, called water spinach in English. I bought it on impulse for the novelty. I looked it up on Woks of Life to learn about since I had never seen it before. It’s rare in the U.S. because it’s an invasive species. 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

I’ve made this basque leek and potato soup. It’s a simple recipe but chopping all the vegetables takes some time. I like soup but I don’t make soup as often as I should. I’ll start making broth or stocks with bones & vegetable scraps then freezing until needed. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

I made southern-style smothered chicken. It’s a bit lighter than other versions because there is no bacon or heavy cream. Aromatics & paprika keep it flavorful. I had it over some mashed potatoes I made with a handful of extra baby potatoes. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

I made this lemony chicken soup with fennel & dill. It came out more like a stew with only a little broth & a lot of meat & vegetables. I wondered if I did not add enough water but I double checked the recipe & I did. I’m not complaining, it’s very good. Recipe below. 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

My first new recipe of the new year. It’s a simplified version of the Spanish dish alubias rojo con sacramentos made with chorizo, cranberry beans & red cabbage with lots of paprika. I combine books & cooking, audio ones while I prep & reading while waiting. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsky #cooking

My first finished ebook of the year. The author is a political scientist who is horrified by the extremism of the right. Their philosophy is culture leads politics. Then the right says there is only one correct culture & coexistence is not possible with others. Thanks NY Public Library. #booksky

My first audiobook of the new year. It’s a history of the last native Americans in the U.S. the author focuses on a handful of native nations (tribes) to tell the larger story of native peoples, how they influenced US history & are still here in the present. Thanks NY Public Library. #booksky

My latest completed read. It’s a fantasy novel with magic, sword fights, ancient gods & their cults. There is a lot of creative world- building with a twist at the end. The main character is a female but not a human, so I won’t say woman. Thanks Queens Public Library @qplnyc.bsky.social #booksky

With schnitzel I made fennel salad with apples & radishes, German cucumber & dill salad, and German potato salad with dill. The first two salads were easy to make with a mandolin. I decided to make the potato salad after looking for recipes for the extra dill. Recipes below 1/4 #foodsky #cooking

My latest read. It’s a steampunk fantasy set in pre WWI Egypt. Genies (djinn) were re-introduced to the world & live openly with regular jobs like people do. It’s a supernatural criminal procedural. The main characters are women & talk about the sexism & colonialism in that setting. #booksky

Dinner was chicken paprikash served over spaetzle. I had planned on using egg noodles but I didn’t realize I was out of them until I started to cook the paprikash. I pivoted & decided to make spaetzle while the chicken cooked. I finally got the technique down for spaetzle. Recipe below 1/3 #foodsky
