This corridor is one of the main thoroughfares of the prison's primary cellhouse. Based on the width and appearance, the photo very likely depicts "Broadway," the central and most well-known corridor in the prison. This main artery separated Cellblocks B and C and was a hub of activity and tension. The Heart of "The Rock" The main cellhouse, constructed between 1910 and 1912, was designed to be the most secure prison in the world. The corridors were given nicknames of famous American streets by the guards and inmates. While "Broadway" was the central passage, other corridors included "Michigan Avenue" alongside A-Block and "Sunset Strip" in the more isolated D-Block. A Walk Down Broadway: For an inmate, this hallway was a constant presence. They would walk this path multiple times a day: for meals in the Dining Hall, for work assignments in the Industries building, or for their one hour of yard time. It was a place of enforced order and simmering conflict. Because it was the main "street," cells located on Broadway offered the least privacy, with constant foot traffic from guards and other Key Events This corridor was the stage for significant events in the prison's history, most notably the Battle of Alcatraz in May 1946. During this violent, 48-hour escape attempt, several inmates took control of the cellhouse. The ensuing siege saw this hallway become a battleground, filled with gunfire and grenade blasts, leading to the deaths of two guards and three inmates. Today, as part of the Golden Gate Natl Rec Area, this hallway is walked by thousands of tourists. Yet, it retains a palpable sense of its dark and oppressive past.
