We actually turned down a couple opportunities to get the movie on Netflix or HBO (for many reasons). Selling our soul (for a small piece of the pie) to some rich folks in a big city who don't have any connection to the outdoors doesn't feel right for this project. When I hear the words "lawyers," "agents," "executive producers," and "Los Angeles," get the heebie jeebies... sounds like not a chill time. So we're keeping it up for free on YouTube and have intentionally disabled mid-roll ads. If people like it they've been tossing a couple bucks our way - and that's been great. By the people for the people. Downsides: because it's on YouTube, Letterboxd removed it which is dumb AND stupid. We had nearly a thousand long, thoughtful reviews in just a couple weeks, and then someone with their film degree shoved too far up their ass (excuse me) decided it didn't belong because it lived on YouTube. At the end of the day, it's just pixels on a are the same way: most of them disqualify you if it's on YouTube. Bit gatekeepy, no? Another thing that stuck out in talking with execs is they'd wrap up the convo by saying "it'd just be great to get this out to the wider world." But there's no wider world than we hit that in a month. And on those platforms it'd just be buried on page four of the documentary section anyways while here it's free and accessible. I mean, a homeless bum can walk into a public library and watch it for free- that's fucking awesome! I think I said my piece, but l'm happy to rant more on the phone if you want. Thanks, Owen
