Why keep making excuses for them? They aren’t stupid, they’re evil.

That makes sense then I think. The consuls were much more business focused so it makes sense to find them in the trade/business/post office directories rather than that type of publication.

Good to know. The variety and honestly amount of consuls for Newcastle was what piqued my interest. Many you’d expect but then some really random ones. Since one of the main duties was to support shipping from the appointing countries, they nearly all have trade links to Newcastle/Australia.

Rando question - did you happen to contact the Newcastle Family History Society last year about consuls? Just wondering as I found a post on their Fb page about someone asking. So either you or potential other researcher.

I can’t say I’ve heard of Gordon & Gotch. Are these general directories like Sand’s and Wise’s? Or more specifically govt type directories?

As you’d expect most of the consuls were local business men but the Chilean consul looks to be actually Chilean in 1902 - Don Manuel Gundelach. This is from the NSW Postal Directory using Tim Sherratt’s data extract on the GLAM Workbench.

Newcastle has it’s own set of directories which have details for all the consuls. There are also a few images of buildings with advertising as a consular location. I also just found a photo of the sign for the French consulate, which exists - the sign, not the consulate.

FYI one guy who was a consul for France has his papers deposited with UoN Special Collections - John Reid collection - A6264 (iv).

Oh, this sounds super interesting. I’ve collected a bit about consuls in Newcastle. Some really interesting places represented. And people representing multiple countries at once. Don’t recall seeing Liberia though.

If businesses insist on applicants having AI skills, then this is a foreseeable outcome. And honestly, I’m pretty ambivalent about that.
