Maybe, but private investment is not interested in fundamental research. Only applied. Serves a different purpose. We need fundamental discovery research to fuel applied research, and I think it is the government’s job to fuel this.

All nice and good, but they forgot one thing: success rates for federal grant applications hover around 15%, how will these newcomers get funding for their research after they move to Canada? It is one thing to attract, but we also need sustainability for excellent science!

We will all fight for the bread crumbs, while the international talents will come and fix Canadian science on big money...🙄

For sure. But the least we can do is to invest the same (or more) portion of our GDP for research as countries of the OECD.
