Ha. Just got a survey request from Microsoft: "We'd love your feedback."

No, you wouldn't...

To correct mistakes use correction tape from a newsagency. Add a stylus to pat down any tape that isn't smooth. Easy and quick and no mess. Don't use whiteout (wet white marks everywhere) or an eraser (shavings!)

Don't get new, get vintage. 60s 70s are great for using. New typewriters are a lie. Plenty of typewriter ribbons available via eBay/Amazon etc. Only a problem if you buy a more recent electronic typewriter that takes a cassette instead of a ribbon.

As I recall, at the time there was a big big debate over whether it's better to have 'codes' like Latex/WordPerfect (so a formatting begin code is followed until a formatting end code is encountered, or templated styles that are a property of the actual text.

Word 'solved' the debate by doing both.

I would grant your point, except that if Word is indeed *that bad* (and it is) then you would invest the time to select and learn another tool or learn how to work with the vagaries of the tool you have. Unfortunately, battling the hegemony is also fraught.

I agree, but if there's one thing academics are good at it's abstraction. If you can understand Bunge's philosophical treatise on ontological perspectives discussing things, emergent properties, state representation and temporality in data, you can understand Styles. But they don't invest the time.

I used to understand WordPerfect back in the day.
