It's quite cold outside, but seeing Orion just above the horizon I had to pull up the camera and climb to the roof.

While I was waiting for the exposure, I saw a "falling star", so the frozen fingers were worth it.

Train service in Austria

Sitting in otherwise smooth ride I noticed a little bit stronger shaking, so I pulled out my phone to check the speed.

The train is trying to cancel a 6 minute delay on a 9 hour trip.

Which I'm thankful for, since I don't want to miss my followup connection :)

The good news is that my cheapo PD power bank can easily power the whole length at reasonable brightness.

I've spent way too much time investigating why my #ws2812 RGB LED strip driven by #esp8266 with #wled firmware is only lighting up roughly half way.

I was checking wiring guides and signal strength, modding the level shifter as per […]

What is my #esp8266 trying to tell me? Did I give it brain injury by some unexpected overvoltage somewhere?

I'm trying to upgrade the screen on my #thinkpad T440s. I'm following this guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Lenovo+Thinkpad+T440s+Display+(Full-HD+no+touch)+Replacement/63644

The guide did not mention one crucial detail - that the screen background is […]

Finally managed to get #wled firmware working on a good old #esp8266 board that was lying in the part box unused.

I need more #rgb in my life!

The real lesson learned though is how easy these little USB-C PD trigger boards make it to extend older hardware with USB power, when paired with e.g. a laptop power supply, or the newer GAN supplies.

I think I should upgrade my Thinkpad to USB-C...

Final data point for today - the module has been running for an hour at ~10W and is hot but stable at ~75⁰C. It seems to be throttling itself maybe?

I will test later with a mini heatsink.

JK, after connecting the load to a different 5V source the "magic" disappeared and I'm seeing more reasonable measurements.

I'm still not able to get more than 10W out of this module. Specs say "<4A" so it's technically true, but so would have "<1000A"...

I was testing out the "Mini 560 PRO" buck converter (the 5V voltage started breaking down past 2A of load)

While doing that my BT-305 power supply started smoking! It was delivering just 500mA ish at 12V so not that much power...

Aaaaaand it killed my GPU (driver) - htop at the top panel, intel_gpu_top in the middle (I have just 8GB GPU) and dmesg in the bottom pane, showing a stream of "[TTM] Buffer eviction failed" errors as the kernel desperately tries to find 13GB to allocate on an 8GB card...
