Last week I went to San Francisco and Sacramento for work. Thanks @mobilityforwho.bsky.social for putting together a fun video featuring my very multimodal trip: biking my @bromptonbicycle.bsky.social to the airport and putting it in the overhead bin, using BART @sfbayferry.com and @amtrak.com!

For the one on the left there is limitless funding and political support to expand and improve.
The one on the right is running on 1920s technology, gasping for basic funding, with little political support.
Our country’s transportation priorities are backwards.

The GDP per capita of Portugal is about 1/3 that of the US.
Yet they have infrastructure like this — high speed rail — that costs 1/10th per mile compared to the US.
The life expectancy is 4 years longer.
And we’re supposed to be the wealthier country. @thetransitguy.com

L.A. is so broke that the best we can do is put a sign over a trip hazard. We now spend more on lawsuit settlements than we do fixing our infrastructure.

I left my house in LA yesterday, biked to @laxairport.bsky.social, folded up my @bromptonbicycle.bsky.social, put it in the overhead bin, and biked to my hotel on the other end in Washington DC.

Only in LA is it acceptable for a sidewalk to double as a driveway and loading zone for parking.
This city prioritizes cars over people to an insane degree.

I’ve been biking to LAX for years. Hardly anyone in LA owns a Riese and Muller Load 75.
My bike on left, theirs on right.

This is a boring ADA compliant curb ramp in NYC. The city’s full of them.
In LA, the city claims they can’t build these for less than $50,000 per ramp.
Under ADA, every change we make to our streets requires them.
Want faster progress? Figure out how to build these cheaper.

This is a 24/7 bus lane in nyc. They are perpetually blocked by deliveries. It doesn’t serve transit riders like this, and yet deliveries need to be made.
We should have commercial loading zones on all side streets closest to major arterials to solve this.

I have many friends in NYC fighting to make biking safer and better. And I know the grass is always greener.
But I have to say after taking my family around for the last few days, NYC is miles ahead of LA
- protected bike lane network
- wide lanes
- green carpet
👏👏
