The contrast between the ideals the U.S. has strived to uphold, however messily and inadequately at times, and the views of the current administration has never been as stark as it was today. The shining beacon on the hill is being intentionally doused by those tasked with keeping it burning.

I think Jelato overdid it watching the news.

I feel ya, buddy.

Pickles is pouting because I wouldn't give her a second (or third, fourth, fifth...) breakfast.

A chilly, but not a chili, day. Beef lentil soup and (I was a bit ambitious) homemade bread. On the left, oatmeal, on the right cheese (cheddar, pepper jack, parm).

I am currently twitching as I listen to a joint trump-musk press conference, and musk was talking about unelected bureaucrats running things....really?

He also sounds like someone pretending to understand things he really doesn't.

The raging hour has come early today. Time for a stiff drink.

I should be editing, but it's a snow day for my 13 year old, I have a fire and cup of tea going, and a multi-dimensional being that masquerades as a cat pinning me down so what am I supposed to do?

While not unexpected, unfortunately, checking the news at this point is a lot like shoving a firehouse into your mouth and turning the spigot on full blast.

Here, have a little cleanse.

The statements from Canada and Mexico regarding the tariffs are mature, measured, and firm, and exactly what you would hope from them as they do what they need to, to protect and defend their countries without trashing a longstanding ally. And more than our dipshit administration's behavior deserves

So...the next pandemic is going to be extra exciting, isn't it? I mean, science-schmience, start passing out the spotlights and bleach now since that is probably the only stuff that will be allowed for treatment. Oh, and boiled raw milk

I loved skiing when I was young, but a problematic knee caused me to give it up. When my two daughters came along and started skiing, and wanted me to join them, I somewhat reluctantly and cautiously started again. Enjoyed it, but was always worried and stopped when they went off on their own...

I'm certainly not qualified to create and moderate one, but I would definitely follow a feed for lay folks about the great vowel shift and the development and evolution of modern and current English.

Just sayin'.

If there is one and I missed it, send it my way.

Me: I could totally live in a tiny house. So efficient and cute.

Also me, to my wife: What do you think about adding 2 or 3 rooms to the house so we can fit more books?

Talk about changing gears. I have to put aside working on the follow-up horror novel to Rathcrog for a bit to do some tweaking of an early chapter book (King Pictairn, planned for 2025) to give the illustrator feedback and guidance...

Give up hope or do what we can for a better day for all?

Yeah, I'll keep doing what I can, as long as I can.

It has taken a few days for me to be able to post this. Our much loved old pup, Gnocchi Noodle, has passed. He joined our family about a year and a half ago. He was mostly blind and deaf, was my constant companion, and one of a kind.

Safe travels, little buddy.

Fascinating...I was added to a block list for furries. I mean, I do post some pics of my critters but otherwise...huh

A rare sighting of a snow cat in Massachusetts.

He has battled back from a bad mouth infection and his diabetes is now under control. He was throwing snow in the air and pouncing on it, but of course as soon as he noticed me watching, he went into inscrutable, serious mode.

Self-imposed deadlines are sometimes more stressful than those handed down by others. Finally made the decision to not push to release my first early chapter book (King Pictairn) next month and to move it to either later this year or, more likely, next Feb.

Less stress all around including...

One of those days that I'm reminded of a quote from Neil Jacobs - It's not that I'm self destructive, it's that I just don't give a shit.

Final writing and editing holiday hiatus activity. It's a boring picture, but makes me happy and with luck, we will soon have a bunch of herbs, lettuce, and mustard greens going for use over the winter.

Since I've decided to not dive back into editing or writing this week, I've made one of my favorite breads, Apulia Olive Bread from a Marcella Hazan recipe.

I'm the only one in the house that eats it and it takes 2 days, so it's a once or twice a year endeavor.
