I think Jelato overdid it watching the news.

I feel ya, buddy.

Pickles is pouting because I wouldn't give her a second (or third, fourth, fifth...) breakfast.

A chilly, but not a chili, day. Beef lentil soup and (I was a bit ambitious) homemade bread. On the left, oatmeal, on the right cheese (cheddar, pepper jack, parm).

I should be editing, but it's a snow day for my 13 year old, I have a fire and cup of tea going, and a multi-dimensional being that masquerades as a cat pinning me down so what am I supposed to do?

While not unexpected, unfortunately, checking the news at this point is a lot like shoving a firehouse into your mouth and turning the spigot on full blast.

Here, have a little cleanse.

That was back in my late 30s. These days I'm closing in on 60 and my late-comer youngest, 13, wants dear old(er) dad to join him on the slopes.

Ah, well. I'll take it as a win that the kid still wants to hang with me. And who needs 2 knees, anyway?

Boys' weekend at Bromley (Vermont).

It has taken a few days for me to be able to post this. Our much loved old pup, Gnocchi Noodle, has passed. He joined our family about a year and a half ago. He was mostly blind and deaf, was my constant companion, and one of a kind.

Safe travels, little buddy.

A rare sighting of a snow cat in Massachusetts.

He has battled back from a bad mouth infection and his diabetes is now under control. He was throwing snow in the air and pouncing on it, but of course as soon as he noticed me watching, he went into inscrutable, serious mode.

Final writing and editing holiday hiatus activity. It's a boring picture, but makes me happy and with luck, we will soon have a bunch of herbs, lettuce, and mustard greens going for use over the winter.

Since I've decided to not dive back into editing or writing this week, I've made one of my favorite breads, Apulia Olive Bread from a Marcella Hazan recipe.

I'm the only one in the house that eats it and it takes 2 days, so it's a once or twice a year endeavor.

We need something like a harmonica neckbrace to hold sandwiches, chicken parts, whatever snacks are needed when driving. Then a car insurance discount as part of a safe driver thing.

Getting a headstart on the post-holiday blahs and, coincidently, avoiding diving in on editing my next book. I'll plant herbs in a small indoor greenhouse after the new year for winter cooking use. Veggies will have to wait a few months since I'm in New England.

Anyone else remember the Brains Benton series? If I recall correctly, after the first couple, they were ghost written. I believe the original author died. Brains and the Danny Dunn series (which I sadly don't have) filled many rainy afternoons when I was young.

The multidimensional being masquerading as a cat is doing better (mouth infection exacerbating diabetes and everything made more challenging because of FIV) but he is still in extra comfort-needy mode. My wife came in looking for help with something, saw me, and said nevermind.

Whether the pen is mightier than the sword is irrelevant when your wife gives you these for Christmas.

She does know me well.

Roast beast in the oven, along with scalloped potatoes, creamed pearl onions. Homemade rosemary-parm bread ready to be warmed, and asparagus with parm ready to be broiled. I'm half Italian and cheating (figure being half, I can get away with it)- Seven fishes tomorrow.
