Amnesia when it comes to race, gender, sex, and sexuality is typical of American memory...This fact is worth studying as we think about the Charlie Kirk assassination and what it means for higher ed, the 1st and 2nd amendments, and our democracy. lnkd.in/eSnvec5d

We too Easily Forget the Spaces Debates are Held when Talking of Free Speech
Kirk was allowed on campuses because of their commitment to democratic ideals; there are fewer spaces like that now, and historically.

Appreciate @emmawhitford.bsky.social asking for my thoughts on the survey's: "If curriculum is being changed as a result of anti-DEI laws, or faculty believe they cannot ask the questions they used to in class as a result of DEI restrictions, then there is impingement on academic freedom."
Survey: Provosts Focused on Funding Cuts, Academic Freedom and AI

Chief academic officers are confident in academic quality but strained by limited resources, policy shifts and other mounting campus challenges, Inside Higher Ed’s annual survey finds. https://bit.ly/4npax6B

Appreciate @emmawhitford.bsky.social & asking for my thoughts on the survey's meaning: "“50% percent of provosts saying academic freedom is facing challenges is pretty bleak...That means that our administrators are having to defend the work of their faculty in ways that they should not have to.”

The attacks on #DEI, institutional autonomy and #academicfreedom are not going away, writes Delta College president @michaelhgavin.bsky.social. He calls on US #highered to stand firm, examine legal obligations closely and work in coalition for the benefit of all students: ow.ly/Erlf50WxRYW #Trump
‘There is no workaround to this moment – we are all targets’
The attacks on DEI and academic freedom show higher education needs to come together, build collaborations and stand firm. Here’s how

This ouster is in retaliaton for working to make an institution align with its values of equality by attending to racial oppression. The political intervention shows whiteness shall not be challenged without consequence, & a clear overreach and violation of institutional autonomy.

The intervention of politics into higher education, and other spheres, is an attempt to shape the country’s future by defining who is a citizen and who is not, in a cultural sense by creating legal definitions of ‘American’ contrary to democracy and equality.

The right is using the comments of left-wing professors to delegitimize higher ed (essay)
By targeting the comments of presumably left-wing professors, the right is using free speech as part of their long-term strategy of delegitimizing higher education itself, writes Victor Ray.
