A job talk is definitely a different beast, rhetorically speaking. Still, I suspect a well editorialized, focused talk that shows perspective will out perform a sheer assault by numbers. But I guess that may be department specific!

I mean more like, properly introduce a research question, show how you approached it and what the challenges were, put it in context. It might still be numerous (not dozens) studies if carefully selected.

A well delivered retrospective can be valuable but in practice it’s often just a barrage of stuff with little connectivity other than “I did this stuff”.

I hear you but I’m suspect if you actually like the kind of talk I’m targeting here. I’m not saying everything needs to be at the most minute level, but that focusing on a few talks instead of sprinting through many loosely connected ones is more satisfying (for me at least)

give me DETAILS. take me on a journey into a difficult problem! Don't just throw citations at me. I want to know how the sausage is made!
