I mean he had the chance to do that by retiring after the concussions. He came back because he loves the game...really wouldn't think he'd want to hold a clipboard and mentor his replacement to collect sick bank. At this point, all sides should move on. Ewers starts, Fins maybe draft a 2nd round QB.

If Tua stays quiet, just ignoring that questioning or giving the platitude like "Right now, I'm here, focused on winning here," this goes nowhere. But I'd actually HOPE that Tua was enough of a gamer to go somewhere he can play instead of sitting and collecting a check.

If Tua WANTS out, he can make that sigificantly easier. He can sign a new deal, converting a big chunk of guaranteed money to signing bonus, taking it off the Salary Cap, if the Fins move him. The Fins likely still have to pay some salary and maybe even part with some picks, but it gets easier.

But it sounds like Tua wants to leave...and honestly, why wouldn't he? It's clear that AT BEST he's competing for the job next year, and McDaniel's reasoning for starting Ewers the last 3 games wasn't resting Tua with nothing on the line, it was "best chance to win".
January 6, 2026 at 3:56 AM
This is actually good news for the Dolphins, in my opinion. Tua holds all the cards on his expensive contract, and if he wanted to stay in Miami, there's little the Fins could do. Releasing him would be roster-killing, trading him nearly impossible.

The Fins sit at 11, but with a thin QB class in the Draft (they'd have to reach a projected 10-15 spots if they took Alabama QB Ty Simpson). Work should probably go to the defense then, which was...atrocious most of the season.
Sadly, there's no more hope for 2026 than 2025 for the Aqua and Orange.
January 5, 2026 at 12:54 AM
In those past 20 seasons, the Fins have been categorically terrible ONCE...1-15 in 2007. EVERY OTHER SEASON they've won between 4-11 games.
The Fins have so much to fix that even trying to do so next year seems a little pointless. Next year should be about stripping down, getting young.

In a league that cycles teams, good to bad, bad to good...the only way to stay "bad" is to be right around average. Over the last 20 seasons the Dolphins are 149–176...not even average, just BELOW it. The fans and I think team have given up on Tua at QB, but he may be too EXPENSIVE to get rid of.

Post-Mortem
I find this Dolphins season frustrating not because anything significant was expected of it, but the feeling of being trapped in mediocrity. The Fins reluctance to completely rebuild shows poorly in the face of teams like the Patriots, who DID, and it worked.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Scoring - Patterson, 111 points. 26/28, long 52Y, 33/34 PAT.
Punting - Bailey, 57 punts, 48.4Y average, 21 inside 20, 3 touchbacks
January 5, 2026 at 12:54 AM
DEFENSE
Tackles - Brooks, 174
Brooks LED THE LEAGUE in tackles this year, 6 more than the Raiders' Devin White.
Sacks - Chubb, 8.5
Interceptions - ...what? No. This is SAD. Douglas...TWO. 2. LED THE TEAM with TWO PICKS. The entire team had 9.

OFFENSE
Passing - Tua (long name, sue me), 2660Y
Rushing - Achane, 1350Y
Receiving Yards - Waddle, 910
Due to the circumstances of Tua's benching and Ewers taking over, here's his 25-26 stat line.
Ewers - 39/60 (65%), 485Y (161.7YPG), 2 TD, 2 INT, 87.2 RTG, 32.1/100 QBR
Ewers injured his knee late.

Another...I think concern is actually too strong a word...is the Fins not having a new GM yet. So this MESS is what awaits them. I say it's not even really a concern because there's 32 GM jobs in the league...someone wants that challenge.
December 18, 2025 at 12:36 PM
What's frustrating about this as a fan is that it's another case of the Fins making the right move and it just not WORKING. Other teams wanted Tua, someone was gonna draft him high. Fins did get lucky when Tua dropped a bit due to injury concerns but if they passed someone nearby was going to bite.
December 18, 2025 at 12:36 PM
Hard to see the Fins keeping Tua on the roster at this point. The relationship has frayed...Tua calling out teammates for meeting attendance, McDaniel more and more saying Tua just screwed up on bad plays. The idea is there for Tua to be a backup bridge to who is next, but why would HE want that?
December 18, 2025 at 12:36 PM
The hit is nearly the same keeping Tua ($56M) vs releasing him ($54M), so the Fins may go the Broncos/Wilson route and just take a gulp and sign the scroll, as it were, especially if Ewers balls out and provides a Bo Nix type solution.
December 18, 2025 at 12:36 PM
This happening in the first season of Tua's extension is inconvenient to the extreme. There's $99M guaranteed Tua is still owed. Releasing him after June 1 would spread that over 2 years, but leave the Fins still paying HUGE money to a QB that wouldn't be on their roster.
December 18, 2025 at 12:36 PM
While, as I said, the move makes sense even if you intend to keep Tua (why risk injury to your franchise QB with nothing to play for?), the fact it's EWERS and not WILSON points to Tua's time with the team ending. Just protecting Tua would mean Wilson. Playing Ewers is seeing if he can REPLACE Tua.
December 18, 2025 at 12:36 PM
The silliest thing about that being that it's really not a factor. A team that plays like this would lose in the cold, in the heat, anywhere.
December 16, 2025 at 4:30 AM
* Bench Tua, play Ewers - Even if you want to KEEP Tua, you know what you have. See what the kid can do in extended time.
* Playing for your jobs - The new GM, Champ Kelly or someone else, likely cleans house. Churn the roster and evaluate everyone you have.

Despite some of the closeness in stats, this looked like an okay team beating a bad team. 3 games remain and the Fins are done. What now?
