as people walked in, the minister responsible for women and gender equity, Nahanni Fontaine, announced two bills to support transgender and two-spirit people. The Vital Statistics Amendment Act would make it possible for adults to apply to change their sex designation without a supporting letter from a doctor. The Human Rights Code Amendment Act aims to expand the list of protected characteristics to include gender expression, which would protect people from discrimination on how they present, Fontaine said. The province also announced it would invest $150,000 in support of 2Spirit Manitoba Inc., an organization that advocates for two-spirit people, $473,000 for Shared Health's Gender Diversity and Affirming Action for Youth program, and about $1 million for the Trans Health Klinic in Winnipeg.

The Manitoba Teachers' Society, representing 16,600 public school teachers across the province, has taken vocal and steadfast positions in opposition to the banning of books from libraries, wresting control of hiring practices from school divisions and the spewing of hate-fuelled rhetoric at school trustee meetings. We do so recognizing that efforts to undermine public education through bodies such as our school boards create a portal to a much larger prize: that of destroying systems of democracy, law, and human rights.

Some Good News™️ for you on this fine Thursday: Bill 43, an amendment to the Human Rights Code that expands protection to cover gender expression, passed its second reading in Manitoba legislature!

It still needs to pass a third reading/receive royal assent but it is ON ITS WAY!!

Tara Sheppard, director of a research group that deals with gender equity, spoke in favour of the bill and suggested there is an easy way for people to avoid being brought before the human rights commission.

Bill to add gender expression to human rights code draws praise, criticism STEVE LAMBERT DOZENS of people lined up Thursday night to air opposition to and support for Manitoba’s plan to add gender expression to the human rights code — a move that would include protections for people to be called by their preferred pronouns. Derek deVries, pastor at Park City Gospel Church in Winnipeg, said the NDP government’s bill would force Christians to go against their beliefs. “This (proposed) law forbids Christians from following Christ’s example. It requires speech he would not permit,” deVries told a legislature committee. Christine Ronceray said the bill amounts to “compelled speech.” “No one in a free society should be forced to say what they do not believe.” Manitoba is one of the few provinces with mandatory public hearings for bills, with the exception of budget-related ones. More than 60 people had registered to speak to the bill, and further hearings were scheduled for next week. Most of the presenters in the first three hours of the hearing spoke against the bill. Some expressed concern they could find themselves brought before the human rights commission for misgendering someone, or for asking to be treated by a doctor of a specific gender. The executive director of the Manitoba Human Rights Commission, Karen Sharma, addressed some of the concerns, saying the code applies to employment, housing and other services and not interactions between private individuals or inside religious institutions. Sharma also said honest mistakes about gender pronouns are very unlikely to lead to any trouble. “I think it’s important to note that the cases that have gone to human rights tribunals and have been found to be discriminatory are cases of sort of malicious, repetitive misgendering,” she said.
