I submitted a paper to a Wiley journal recently (accepted with minor revisions). When resubmitting, the platform forces me to accept a new term before proceeding, to allow the publisher to use my paper to train their #AI. This is NOT real #consent nor a fair contractual term. #publication_ethics

Really enjoyed attending ENRIO conference. I raised the issue that 'RCR trainings do not necessarily improve openness of science,' partly because most of the work a researcher must do to open up science is ultimately work they do for free for others #open_science

Sunday's @chicagotribune.com my plea for a ceasefire "to prevent further bloodshed in both countries" is published beside a completely one-sided piece noting that since military objectives are achieved, killing civilians in #Iran is acceptable and #Israel should continue its attacks!

Humbled to have played a small role in the @nationalacademies.org report "An #AI Code of Conduct for #Health and #Medicine" nap.nationalacademies.org/download/29087

Excited to be part of the upcoming Three I's conference in Chapel Hill focusing on #Biosecurity and #Research_Integrity. It's an honor to kick off the event with a keynote address and I'm looking forward to insightful discussions and learning. #IACUC #IBC #IRB

Ever wondered what #AI uses should be disclosed in your publications? David Resnik & I distinguish between mandatory, optional, & unnecessary cases, arguing that disclosure should be mandatory only when AI use is intentional and substantial. More here: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

The annual meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics was a great success. Despite the snow storm in Norfolk, we had an amazing turn out with lots of fascinating discussions. Learn more and join us in 2026 in St. Louis: www.appe-ethics.org

In today's meeting of the #UNESCO WG on #OpenScience and #AI, I discussed a critical dilemma: Restricting AI’s access to science limits progress, but full access risks empowering AI owners over scientists.

#Social and #environmental impacts of #GenAI
We distinguish between the impacts of GenAI hardware and its training & development: "it is nearly impossible to assign a definitive value to natural resources, or the cultural and social well-being of affected communities." doi.org/10.1016/j.es...

In today's Chicago Tribune: Should we prioritize the use of resource-intensive #AI, researchers' time and public funds to resurrect extinct beings? Or should we invest these resources into conserving species that are critically endangered today to prevent biodiversity from more degradation?

Using #AI in #genetics & #genomics research can be beneficial, but the risks to humans, other sentient beings, and the #environment remain mostly unknown. I & Chris Donohue argue that the ethical discourse should be expanded & we need to develop appropriate guidance. More here: rdcu.be/d1S5e

Annalisa Mastronardi asked me to define
#EthicalAI. To me, it integrates values and principles to enhance all forms of life, is #explainable, makes its outputs recognizable, warns of #biases & limitations, discloses training data, #environmental impact, and informs users about data use & storage.
