As a neat bit of trivia, I know the mdf repair is from 1980, because they sealed up a section of the Herald in the back of the mirror!

I'm guessing the mdf didn't quite fit the angle of the wood frame, so my grandad used the paper to fill the gap.

Does anyone know anything about old mirrors?

I have one (my great grandparents wedding gift!) that has an issue with the frame, so I've taken the c.1980 mdf backing off & found the original maker stamp.

Except this looks to be from 1926, and my dad says the wedding was earlier than that...

And this is my old boy, Zac, who will be 19 next month!

He has just started on hyperthyroidism medication, and has just enjoyed his third meal of the day...

Cats that I am currently feeding while their people are away:

Pango, the little black gremlin

Mabel, the queen of cuisine

and Floki, the one cat I've ever met whose tummy is Not A Trap!

In the end I wasn't happy with the cotton tape, so I ended up changing the tab design.

I used white elastic instead of the cotton, with velcro and fabric scraps on the ends. Visually this is much less busy, and the elastic was really great for ensuring a good fit of the cover.

Once I was happy with how the cover was sitting, I made white cotton tape tabs, with velcro, to attach the cover to the bike frame.

Here's proper attempt #1, with some outdoor fabric I had left over from a cushion project. This fabric is waterproof, so rain just slides right off it, rather than soaking in.

The main issue with mockup #2 was that the fabric I was using had a weird stretch to it. So I decided to make a paper template instead.

This worked really well for getting a proper pattern around the rear rack, wheel lock and other fiddly bits. I just taped on extra paper where needed!

Mockup #1 didn't fit so well, mainly because I'd only made two side pieces for the cover, and not a middle strip for the mudguard.

Mockup #2 was more successful! Plus using the cotton strips as tabs meant I could more easily remove the cover, and tighten it where needed.

Here's the saga of my attempts at a skirt guard! First I tried a fabric mock-up, with a cord looped through holes in the fabric and around the bike frame to hold it in place.

This was ok-ish, but the fit wasn't right, and it took forever to remove or install the cover.

I mean, look at this! After ~9 months of rain this is amazing

Bwahaha yes sometimes it is a bit of a mission!

But I have found that an elastic loop around the leg and a clothes peg keeps everything under control.

Or for special events, a petticoat 😅😆

Ok NZ plant folks I need some reckons!

I have two Radermachera trees (white trumpet shaped flowers) that I planted as 1.2m saplings in 2019.

Until recently both were doing really well, but you can see that the one on the right is now yellowing.

What's going on?!?

Not a shark scientist, but I have to admit your photo reel is weird when you work at a museum...

Ok, when I listen to this sentence, it totally has "baconator" in it. Or maybe I'm just hungry?

This is one of my favourite photos.

I can remember how I felt when I took it - tired from travel, excited to be exploring, and intrigued by the challenge of water & reflections & ripples.

It is not a technically great photo, but to me it's perfect.

Show me yours?
