More mid-century modern Gorey! The typography for both of these books is credited to Edward Gorey. Biographical sources suggest that he was not well-versed in classic typography, and he found it easier to develop his own lettering style. The rest is history.

In my mailbox today: Cold War Gorey! It’s fairly well known that “Ted” Gorey was an illustrator and typographer for the Doubleday Anchor series in the ‘50s, but it’s less well known that he lettered their political series. Seeing his spidery hand on these modernist pamphlets is SO satisfying to me.

Crippa scratches my mid-century modern itch in the best way. He doesn’t get mentioned as an influence on Richard Powers’s SF illustrations (at least not in the material I have at hand ) but I see Crippa in several Powers covers, such as the first Ballantine ed. of Sheckley’s CITIZEN IN SPACE

My current collecting kick is the Anchor Goreys (Gorey did illustration & typography for Doubleday in the ‘50s) & I’ve been mostly finding them for a few $$ each. But the price of this one has been jacked up into the $100s bc the fucking Nazis are fanboys of Gobineau. I want them out of my life.

To wander the wide open deserts of the West Mojave is now a tour of vast solar farms. The rapidity with which they are tiling over Antelope Valley with solar panels is astonishing. Soon it will be a near-unbroken sea of black glass.
