I suspect it's approach to the subject won't work for most (white sexy couple struggles in farm house); but there's a lot to appreciate, as well. I felt as ambivalent about it as I was clearly meant to.

I'd say anyone who has dealt with a loved one in mental anguish this way, may not find the movie's love affair with its lead actress all that pleasurable. Still, Lawrence gives a hell of a performance, buttressed by stars who come from this era of filmmaking (Sissy Spacek is perfectly cast).

It felt like a movie from another era (cue comparisons to Gena Rowlands), a character study of an unwell person who resists being cured, whose illness is treated with fascination by the film, and also as a kind of unique access to feralness and freedom.
