It seems trendy lately to have visualizations of 3D proteins structures generated by AI. These show very ugly artifacts, akin to AI pictures of humans with the wrong number of fingers. It is really not hard to make a visualization of a random protein structure using free software! #AI-slop

Cool visualization of MAG cis dimerisation and trans ganglioside binding at the axon-myelin interface by Krzyszlof Anklewicz, a bachelor student @utrechtuniversity.bsky.social. This structure was the main discovery of my PhD! Find the open access paper here: www.nature.com/articles/nco... #glycotime

Next week will be the FEBS Advanced Lecture Course 'Emerging insights from structural biology into molecular mechanisms of diseases', where I will present new structural biology and protein engineering results at the 'Academia meets industry' session. Hope to see you there!

Ever used a FLAG-tag and wondered how it is recognized by anti-FLAG M2? Check out our preprint where we determined a crystal structure of the complex: biorxiv.org/content/10.1... #structuralbiology #crystallography

Big improvements mentioned in the new #alphafold white paper, but still wrong models about half the time. I guess we aren't out of a job just yet...

Beautiful work by Saunders et al on the coronavirus HKU1, that complements our recent finding that HKU1 spikes open up upon sialoglycan receptor binding (nature.com/articles/s4158…), allowing binding to a secondary protein host receptor, now identified as TMPRSS2!

It's silly how satisfying this is to me...

And it's out! Check out our paper in @Nature on the human coronavirus HKU1 spike binding to a sialoglycan receptor, leading to spike opening via large conformational changes. Massive thanks to @danielhurdiss.bsky.social, @raouljdegroot.bsky.social and all co-authors!
