TICKS ARE BACK! Fall is the time when adult deer ticks re-emerge and seek a bloodmeal before winter. As temperatures cool down, mosquitoes and other insects will be less abundant, but ticks remain active until we see consistent freezing.

Check yourself and your pets after those fall hikes!

The end (of mosquitoes) is nigh! Virtually all mosquitoes can't power their flight when temperatures are below 55 degrees. With overnight lows in the 40s this week that means mosquito numbers are going to continue to drop and the end of the season may be close!

WEEKLY UPDATE: Human-biting mosquitoes continue to decline and, thankfully, that also includes disease vectors. We may see one last surge this week due to heavy rain, but not without a fight - staff treated over 35,000 acres of larval habitat last week!

The risk of West Nile virus is increasing in Minnesota. The positivity rate is higher than normal for July and activity appears to be on the rise. Residents are advised to take precautions:
- Wear EPA Registered insect repellent
- Eliminate standing water
- Avoid the outdoors at dawn and dusk

UPDATE: This week mosquitoes collected in Hennepin County (Minneapolis, Eden Prairie, Corcoran) and Washington County (Baytown) tested positive for West Nile virus for the first time and mosquitoes from the same trap in Carver County (near Hancock Township) tested positive for the second time.

Mosquitoes collected in Anoka and Carver Counties have tested positive for West Nile virus. These are the first positive samples of the year for each of these counties.

Residents should wear bug spray and eliminate any standing water.

WEEKLY UPDATE: We are the closest to the 10-year average we've been since we started surveillance in May, thanks in part to cattail mosquitoes beginning to emerge in some areas.

Helicopters continue to be active today and tomorrow as we attempt to reduce mosquito larvae. The dipper below from Dakota County on Friday is an example of what we're facing (all of those little specks are mosquito larvae).

Today for National Mosquito Control Awareness Week we move on to the Catch Basin Crew! Catch basins (storm water drains) collect stagnant water that become good habitat for mosquitoes!

Meet Sean Ford from the St. Paul Crew and learn about what that position does:

We had a successful tire drop-off event for Scott and Carver County yesterday where we collected over 1,600 tires! Tires hold murky, stagnant water where disease vector mosquitoes can thrive, so removing them from the environment helps protect public health!

There's a pretty good chance our adult mosquito traps have been impacted by rain during their collection times, but even so mosquito numbers appear to be quite low.
