In the penultimate week of mosquito surveillance the numbers remained flat. Most mosquito traps returned very low numbers, but hot spots along the Minnesota River in Eagan, Burnsville, Shakopee, and Eden Prairie collected a lot.

TICKS ARE BACK! Fall is the time when adult deer ticks re-emerge and seek a bloodmeal before winter. As temperatures cool down, mosquitoes and other insects will be less abundant, but ticks remain active until we see consistent freezing.

Check yourself and your pets after those fall hikes!

Mosquitoes stayed close to average last week, but the distribution is not equal. A few traps along the Mississippi River had the highest counts including one in Eagan that collected over 2,600!

WEEKLY UPDATE: Mosquito numbers increased slightly last week, but are still close to the average for this time of year. There are a few outliers like a trap in Blaine that collected over 900 mosquitoes, but for the most part things are winding down.

The end (of mosquitoes) is nigh! Virtually all mosquitoes can't power their flight when temperatures are below 55 degrees. With overnight lows in the 40s this week that means mosquito numbers are going to continue to drop and the end of the season may be close!
