Contrary to popular opinion I don’t yet control the weather…
Scientist @ Met Office
Its rained ~3mm in the last 30 days in Exeter according to my wx station... and also well above average temperature, with many days above 25C. Tentative signs for showery rain the coming week but nothing particularly substantial to bank on...

How to make any subsequent train journey seem luxurious in the country; take a CrossCountry train first... stuffy, often standing (4 coaches for train from Penzance->Scotland!)

Travelling to Reading for a team day, hot on the heels of attending RMetS Conference in Manchester (fab, well organised).

Okehampton yesterday to run along the Granite Way… cloud base only 50m or so above ground. Looks dry and hot this week!

Not sure what gust strength was measured in Exeter, but #StormBert has had a right go at our fences - strongest winds for a long time.

Snow in Exeter currently…

Down tumbles the temperature and slight drop in rh, heavy snow in Exeter, remains to be seen if intensity keeps up and it settles…

Heavy rain with some sleet mixed in at Exeter…

Its one of those few occasions in the SW where we could see snow... but fine margins again, cold rain if it pushes too far north, dry if too far south. Need optimal combo of precip intensity and cold undercut

In north Milton Keynes there has been some falling (and settling snow). Source; mum!

Been on Bluesky for a few months now, but great to see the recent flurry of new joiners who used to be on the platform that cannot be named 😄

Stubborn cloud sheet finally clearing, nice to see how meteorology on surface corroborates with satellite view!

A VERY WET September for parts of southern England - the first time 300% has appeared on a rainfall average map for September. It was the wettest September in southern England since 1918 and the wettest calendar month for Bedfordshire and Oxfordshire since 1836. Exceptional.

Today’s pondering; in today’s modern age, given climate change, water scarcity, why are new builds not recycling rain water to be used as grey water for flushing toilets etc.? We design drains for rain water, we design drains for toilets, they both (in most cases) converge into one sewerage pipe?? 🤔

Today;

"Hi Engineer james.warner,

We have been reading your paper: Resolving the Turkana Jet—Impact of Model Resolution in Simulating Channel Flow and Inversions and found it very interesting and relevant to our HEREM Conference theme. It could help with develpment for Materials & Energy."

Impressive meteogram from EC for Exeter today... going to be interesting to see how much rain falls over next few days. Then followed by NW'ly, possible max's 14-15C with near freezing nights. Summer feels a long way away already!

After a pretty dry August (around 15mm in the gauge here), next few days Thu-Sat look interesting. Potential for some really heavy + persistent rainfall. Latest GFS/EC suggest widely 40-50mm.

A lot of run to run variability in how models resolve the vortex over Biscay as expected in this setup!

This mornings late summer run along #Exeter estuary…
Ground very dry. Only ‘big’ rainfall we had was 6/9th July. Disappointing one for storms, think we had a rumble in May.
