I’m not raising children, so I can’t comment on that fully, but there’s not quite a real pressure to raise children Buddhist, from what I’ve seen. It’s encouraged, and there is a sense of “we are sad about this, our religion is bleeding members in the US” (and it is), but we don’t push.

With regard to lineage… Buddhism is about 500 years older than Christianity, so we certainly *do not* lack for lineages, texts, schools of thought, or debates. Our sect itself is about 850 years old.

Our services are also largely in English, except for the bits involving sacred texts which are either one-to-one Japanese translations of Chinese characters that are themselves translations from Sanskrit/Pali, or Classical Japanese. But we provide translations.

this is fascinating to read about as a Buddhist where our entire attitude to raising kids Buddhist (whether the parents are intermarried or not) is "consider, perhaps, sending them to Dharma school? if they want to play basketball with us they do have to come most of the time"
