I think the most alarming thing in America is how few people care. You can say they're ill informed, or not picking up the news, etc... but that's a choice. The angry right is really a minority, the rest of the citizens are vaguely angry but not pointed at anything. It is a sense of hopelessness.

Sigh, why did I have to get 🍆pics randomly recommended to me in my Bluesky feed. I am not a prude, I just personally do not need photos.

I am a former incarcerated firefighter. I served in a California fire camp from 2009 to 2012.

Misinformation is afire on the internet, so here are facts about the prison firefighter program, all in one place.

A thread.

@thehighsign.bsky.social I realized I never thanked you for endorsing the “Nobody” playlists on the Gabfest. I found them on Spotify, and it’s been such a great resource for finding different classical music, esp since I only got into classical during pandemic.

I believe in being a strategic hater, so here's my perspective (informed by being in the tech industry during this goofy time) on _why_ Meta did this, which I hope will inform and inspire better ideas on how we fight this. Apologetically, 🧵

I feel kind of defiant lighting Hanukkah candles the last couple of years because of how many people have insist that to be Jewish means closing your heart to the suffering being inflicted on Palestinian people, and I could not disagree more.

This is absolutely BRILLIANT.

The Finnish gov knows that educating its kids to critically think so they can understand the concept of actual fake news will protect its democracy.

The Aust gov needs to consider adding this type of leaning to the Aus curriculum.

Finland is winning the war on fake news. What it’s learned may be crucial to Western democracy
Russia's neighbor has developed a plan for countering misinformation. Can it be exported to the rest of the world?

Whoops, I possibly went TOO hard today for someone 40 weeks pregnant, but I also procured many greenmarket apples and Concord grapes. I regret nothing.

@juliaturner.bsky.social just finished Slate Plus and wanted to encourage you to find some LA Birders on here! I know I loved birding twitter back in the day. (And CC @thehighsign.bsky.social since I think we both want to encourage you here 😂)

🪶 I got my first photos of a striking Phainopepla this morning during a stroll at Silverlake Reservoir.

Los Angeles is paradise for birders.

Social media has weirdly conditioned a huge number of people to feel like they're Doing Something by posting, and Doing Nothing if they don't post about a particular thing, and in general neither of those things are true.

just a reminder that john oliver did better in a condensed 60 seconds to defend trans rights and trans people than the entire democratic party in a 6 month campaign.

The worst thing about the internet is when a source disappears. I found an old broken link that I wanted to revisit, but it was Instagram and seems to be lost to time and tide. Sigh. Not important, but just gives me pangs of melancholy.

Went for a stroll in Green-wood Cemetery to see if I could find a grave I had seen a few years ago, memorable because it had a frieze of West Point Military Academy on it. Was not successful in my ramble, but did manage to find it online at findagrave.com. Bless the internet.

i think it should be a bigger story that NYC’s public libraries are now being forced to close on Sundays due to budget cuts while the NYPD spends 95% of the Library system’s total budget to get new encrypted radios that prevent people from knowing when the cops kill people
The NYPD is spending $390 million on a new, encrypted radio system
The public and news reporters will no longer be able to listen in.
