Another rainy day here at Ephemera Farm.

Two more inches brings us to 7.6 for the week.

When it rains I love to walk the property to see the story that water and gravity write.

SPRING BEAUTY

I saw our first Claytonia virginica (spring beauty) in flower today in the #garden, even though it was missing a petal. 🌱 #gardeningfeed

They are about three weeks late for when I typically see flowers in December.

For most of the rest of the country they are quite early though.

HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA

With the arrival of winter, I keep my eye out for anything that might be in bloom in the #garden.

I can always rely on Hamamelis virginiana (American witch hazel) to sport some flowers. 🌱 #gardeningfeed

NATURAL DECOR

I love to explore the wilds around our house to find natural decor for Christmas in the #garden and indoors. #gardeningfeed 🌱

CHRISTMAS DECOR

Each holiday season, I love to reflect on our trip years ago to Colonial Williamsburg—a place where history and creativity shine during the winter season for #garden craft. #gardeningfeed 🌱

FINDING MISTLETOE

In the holiday season, I delight in finding in the #garden windfall sprigs of Phoradendron leucarpum—our native American mistletoe. #gardeningfeed 🌱

Thank you! I’m looking forward to the light.
Great Thread!
Remember, the Winter Solstice means that starting tomorrow, the days really ARE getting a little bit longer.
THE FIRST DAY OF WINTER

Happy first day of winter! For me in the #garden this day symbolizes the new year more than January 1. From here the days will only get longer.

Here is what I’m keeping in mind. 🌱 #gardeningfeed

It is blurry as all get out, but last night I loved seeing the Cold Moon through the slightest bit of fog in the #garden.

It made the Panicum virgatum ‘Northwind’ seed heads glow. 🌱

I love this point in the year when the Taxodium distichum (bald cypress) and the Andropogon virginicus (broomsedge) that is increasing in the orchard #garden beds are both a play on the color orange.

SOUTHERN SUGAR MAPLE 🌱

The woods across from our #garden is lit with the glow of Acer floridanum (southern sugar maple).

It is one of my favorite native trees for its stately appearance and wonderful fall color.

DARK LEAF SWEETGUM 🌱

I love Liquidambar styraciflua in the fall for their brilliant #garden colors that range from golden yellow to the darkest purple.

Take this dark leaf selection I found growing off a multi-stem crown on our road a few years ago.

Good morning from Ephemera Farm. We got over 4 inches (10 cm for my Euro friends) of rain yesterday. 1–2 inches were forecasted.

I’m happy I got three Lindera angustifolia (willow-leaf spicebush) planted prior in the #garden.

Their fall color is exquisite.

MODULAR DESIGN

Naturalistic planting for a #garden can seem daunting.

There’s so many plants to choose, and how in the world do you arrange them all?

A strategy popularized by Roy Diblik in his book The Know Maintenance Perennial Garden is to build modules that are repeated across a site. 🌱
