Okay let’s hear it

I’ll be honest, I’m pretty worried

40% of the ocean meets criteria to be a marine heat wave

NOAA forecasts we’ll be at 50% by the end of summer. (Typical years are ~10%)

We are NOT ready for the mass die offs, food web disruptions, harmful algal blooms, and damage to fishing/coastal communties.

Today I realized Luna will stop eating if I’m listening to a podcast on speakers because she’s listening for words (and commands) that she knows.

I'm also really worried about our inability to keep previously rebuilt stocks at healthy levels. It takes years, and a lot of sacrifice by fishermen, to rebuild a stock. It's heartbreaking to see us lose any of that progress and have to start over.
July 7, 2023 at 5:06 PM
For overfished stocks - ones where the number of fish of that stock is low and needs to be rebuilt - we've been stuck, or even losing progress some years. Ideally this number should be zero. But 48 (known) stocks in the U.S. are considered overfished still.
July 7, 2023 at 5:03 PM
Overfishing roughly means the rate we're catching fish reduces the size of the population over time. We've been stuck in the same place for a while now: 7%. For some stocks, like greater amberjack in the Gulf of Mexico, overfishing has continued unabated for years and years.

Obligatory first post is Luna. I estimate this will be about 40% Luna, 40% fish stuff, 20% random. You’re warned!
