Gearing up to return to the mainland from Catalina Film Festival. Hope the ferry can evade the cruise ship blockade.

Script contest reading time again. Tip of the day: character intros offer a chance to slip a *little* something extra in for actors. That's not the same thing as inserting the character's C.V. or their therapist's notes that week.

DANGER--pointless story theory enclosed

Posited: in order for sympathetic antagonists to work, unsympathetic (or at least LESS sympathetic) antagonists must exist to compare them to, not just flawed protagonists.

Not necessarily in the same story, although that certainly works.

I'm on the verge of setting up a chess timer I can just slap when I feel stuck in a plot crux. If nothing comes to me in 20 minutes, I gotta move on.
Stuck in a scene? Do what the pros do: use brackets. Write what the story beat is:

[Our hero gets out of the fight through clever means]

Then just keep writing what happens after. Maintaining momentum is key to getting the most words on the page. Meanwhile solutions often present themselves later.

Tempted to work this into the next job interview.
Interviewer: what's your greatest strength?

Me: i have exceptional hindsight

Interviewer: that doesn't really help us

Me: yes, i see that now

Job interview responses I'm perilously close to using:
"Where do you see yourself in five years?"
"In the same chair I'm in right now, doing what I always do. If you're lucky I'll be doing it for you."

Something I just wrote over at the metazone that's actually pretty good for this hour of the morning: Internal conflict happens in the space between what a character wants and what a character needs. You can write a perfectly functional story without it, but never a great one.

I was at most a frequent guest, never a regular, over at the place with almost no character(s) in its name or anything else. I figure I can do that here, right? Hope to see more writers here soon-ish.
