Carers play an important role in supporting people with mental illness, learning disability, dementia, and related conditions. Unfortunately, their voices often go unheard. Our report ‘Not on the radar’ captures some of their experiences:

We heard from a carer: “At the moment there is no support as a carer. There’s a whole world of theoretical things, this is what should happen and the rest of it, but in reality there is very little.” Even though steps have been taken to support carers, many who spoke to us still feel their situation hasn’t improved much. Our single recommendation is for Scottish Government to recognise carers as equal partners in care. Not just in theory, but in everyday practice, with clear rights to information, meaningful involvement in care planning, and provided with necessary support. The first in a series of visits to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Inpatient units has found a mix of concerns for the safety and wellbeing of young people, alongside committed staff and positive initiatives at the Melville Unit in Edinburgh.
