Here's Paul Harvey in Human Events, April 1964 ("I Wanna Hold Your Hand" era Beatles), complaining about the dangerous, rampant immorality on college campuses. The college kids he's complaining about were mostly white, and are today in their early 80s.
'Liberty' on the Campus By PAUL HARVEY Nobody knows how much "he-ing" and "sheing" goes on on the campus because most colleges ignore extracurricular sex activities by students unless unfavorable publicity spotlights Early March in Indianapolis' Clay-pool Hotel, male and female students cavorted for a weekend which police described as an "orgy." "Wild sex parties at Harvard" were disclosed by officials of the oldest and richest of our nation's colleges. Harvard men are allowed to entertain women in their dormitory rooms. UCLA now allows women students to stay out all night Stanford's Prof. Louis Mayhew says when colleges seek to take a stand against premarital sex, students consider the rules unrealistic. "Liberty" is what students now choose to call what we used to call "promiscuity." Has "liberty" made them happier, better adjusted, better balanced? Prof. Mayhew says, " There has been an alarming incidence of suicide, hypertension, ulcers and narcotics addiction among college youth." Worse perhaps, when college administrations enforce no standards for campus conduct, they lose the respect of students in other spheres. Prof. Mayhew says the only bright spot in the bleak prospect is that most young people soon discover there is no lasting satisfaction in sexual "lib erty" and they then seek elsewhere for a meaning and purpose for their lives.
