Yesterday was wonderful: I got to hang out with friends mask less after we pooled a test using the PlusLife… we played monster of the week and partook in silly antics.

The ongoing failure in pandemic response is unfolding before our eyes.

The same institutions that failed to handle COVID-19 are now withholding data on a virus that could be even more dangerous.

Yes. Also, NIH itself has stopped recruitment of PhD students, postbacs, and postdocs at all its campuses.

The nat'l recruitment cycle is closing, everyone will be done soon. It's already a lost year of talent coming in to do great science at NIH. Damage to 🧪 is real. (Story linked below, see 🧵.)
N.b.: Missing one round for grant submissions is one thing. But we're in the stage of the annual grad school cycle where students choose a doctoral program. U Iowa could be losing an entire year's worth of graduate students in some programs here.
If University of Iowa can’t afford NIH 15% indirect rates then no one in California, NY, Fla or Pennsylvania can

As someone who is looking for my next postdoc right now… this is disheartening.

I had hope to work on the projects I am passionate about at some point in my career (which would impact and help communities I care about).

How do I keep my hope from fading?
The Trump NIH is banning hires of new students and postdocs. This is devastating for NIH research and will result in a lost generation of researchers at the institution.

Heard from a applicant today: "A lot of people are banking their entire careers on the [NIH student programs]..."

Anyone? 👇
A friend of mine has a personal contact with Alabama representatives and will send a personal message regarding #NIH #indirect funding cuts. She is looking for personal stories of the effects of science funding cuts on individual people, particularly if they are in Alabama! Share, I'll pass them.
