The "better" is the MC doesn't just drive the story. The MC has a solid ensemble. They have an arc that you continually invest in that is interesting beyond the premise.

In short, it doesn't feel like a gimmick or a bait and switch.

And that's the flaw with OP and OPM. A gimmick MC is shallow.

That narrative choice works. Clearly. There are 1 mil One Piece episodes. One-Punch Man is still compelling story. Buffy is a cult classic.

Yet, it annoys me as I watch.

Especially, especially bc in the case of the author of One-Punch Man, he did the same thing but better in Mob Psycho.

It's a "flaw" bc just like with Buffy, the other characters, who have been supporting the story--all the narratives--always have to be weaker than the MC.

Simply bc they are not the MC.

The monsters, the ensemble, the baddies get fleshed out arcs bc the main characters are literally devices. Or they become them bc there is little else to them.

I find that interesting, boring, and frustrating.

The entire story is about the MC, and it also not about them at all.

Both mangas/animes are very aware of this flaw. This is why the secondary characters get so much screen time. Why it seems everyone around them, the MC, are/seem so much more nuanced and so much more developed.

So now I am clenched for another hour as I wait for the bus.
