It wasn't all theft and teasing. Herder was a genius and interesting and Bonde found himself lingering longer when he visited, asking Herder serious questions about his inventions and getting him to show off even some of his most secret works in progress-inventions even Mycroft Holmes had yet to see—inventions so new and unstable that Bonde wouldn't dare borrow...and several that he absolutely would dare. And Herder, in turn, began to teach him the proper dismantling, cleaning, and reassembly of several of his specialty firearms—under the logic that if Bonde were going to insist on stealing them, he damn well ought to know how to take care of them properly.

"I am not a party to your Moriarty plan!" Milverton snarled, heart thumping in his ears as the blade pressed sharp against the bob of his throat. William's eyes blazed, so furiously angry and close he could see tears welling at their edges. His stance shifted, blade turning and... this was it, Milverton reasoned. After everything. Distant footsteps pounded, muffled voices in the hall outside his office and then— "Mr. Milverton! Mr. Milverton, sir!" His vision swam. Ruskin...no... he could accept his own foolish end...but not — "Baron Hershel is dead!" Ruskin throws the door open but William has already vanished and Milverton is sliding slowly down the wall, dizzy and just beginning to realize his close he just came to death himself, when Ruskin is cradling his face in his hands and suddenly Milverton is dizzy for an entirely different reason and damn Holmes for putting such thoughts in his head but Ruskin is loosening Milverton's tie and slipping a a hand beneath his collar and... "Wh-what are you..." "You're bleeding!" Ruskin cries, face so close, so concerned. Oh DAMN HIM. "It's not my blood," Milverton wheezes. When he had said not to get blood on anything that had included HIM.

"Friend of yours?" "Not particularly," William said. "Do Lords not have friends?" the memory of his dream echoed back at him. William shook his head to clear it, annoyed. "And after his death, I was glad of that. There were rumors of Mr. Bale's involvement with a certain local opium den, and while the school managed to keep the scandal mostly contained, having such an acquaintance could have been quite damaging for someone like myself. I would imagine those rumors are what brought you here?" Sherlock grunted an affirmative, motioning for William to continue. "I can only assume the related death you refer to would be that of a young woman who jumped off the same bridge some two weeks prior. I have...I'll admit, probably more information than most about that situation as it involved one of my students." How much information was too much? William wondered. From here, the conversation would be walking a tightrope. While Lucien claimed to remember very little about that night, memories were precarious. It was entirely possible that he might begin to remember more. Of all the cold cases Sherlock had to take an interest in... "But it has been almost six months since both of those tragedies," William continued. "Even if there was foul play, surely the trail would have gone cold by now." Sherlock took a long drag on his cigarette, considering. "Perhaps. But there was a survivor."

"Have you considered getting away, sir?" "Getting away? From what? Life?" Milverton dismissed the idea immediately...except. It had been a while since he visited his estate in Brighton. Wasn't that what people did when they needed to recover? Go visit the ocean or something? He wasn't exactly one for sea bathing, but the coastal breeze was nice when he left the balcony door of his office open. And perhaps just being there ensconced with all of his lovely blackmail documents would help clear his mind...dispel this unsettling conflicted feeling he kept experiencing. This horrible sinking feeling that he was somehow becoming less evil and more human.

Magic is limited only by imagination. And Übel's imagination has always been vast. So the realization, when it comes, is as surprising as it is unwelcome. She can no longer imagine a world without Land at her side. The thought is absurd. She still doesn't even know which Land is real-if any of them even are. Sometimes she sits on watch at night, poking at their campfire and staring hard at his sleeping form, wondering. If the Land she's staring at is a clone, where in the forest around them could the real Land possibly be sleeping? Does he sleep? Can he sleep and still maintain a clone so perfect that she can hear the soft hiss of its snores? It's an intoxicating thought, such an ability. Übel can imagine endless ways to exploit his magic...if only she could crack it. Because that's all this is. It's just taking longer than expected, and it's not helping that Land is all-too-aware of her intentions as she accompanies him on his seemingly aimless journey across the northern countryside.

"It's perfect," Irene says, voice dropping several octaves naturally.

Milverton sighed and threw on his coat, ushering William back out the door and into his waiting carriage as quickly as possible. With Sherlock bored and presumably still caseless, there was every chance of him also showing up unannounced, and he could not have that. If nothing else, these two enemies must never meet. And if he had to suffer the grandstanding of one of his least favorite MPs in order to avoid such a meeting, so be it. The elder Moriarty at least had the grace to look apologetic. Albert tipped his hat toward him in greeting. "I did try to get him to send a card, but he assured me the invitation had been given in person." "Lord Moriarty," Milverton tipped his hat and nodded in return. "I believe the last we saw each other was—" "The Prince's Masquerade Ball...at Buckingham." "Indeed. Such a shame about Baron Rollinson." Albert blinked at him. "Who?" he asked blithely. Milverton's eyes narrowed. It would be funny if Lord Moriarty didn't always wear such a dead-eyed stare. Milverton could never tell if he was joking. "The one who you poisoned," he replied. "Hmm...Do you know, my cleaners were never quite able to get that wine stain out."

His eyes shot open in alarm, bare feet squaring in a defensive stance. Oh dear. Milverton waved his hands. "No, no-yes! YES! Everything is fine!" He crossed the room in three long strides and grasped Ruskin by the shoulders, pushing him back out into the hallway, despite his objections, and closing the door to give them some privacy. "What are they doing here?" Ruskin asked, voice an octave higher than normal. "I thought the point of this trip was to get away from them?" Milverton sighed and rubbed Ruskin's shoulders in what he hoped was a reassuring manner. "Very true, but it seems my problems have followed me. You know what annoying people they are." "Should I send word to Harry and Gosling—“ "No! No. It's...fine. Calling them in might complicate matters further. Holmes and Moriarty seem to have no ulterior motives for their visits. No animosity, in any case. Though...I'm fairly certain Moriarty will actually murder me if I wake the staff at this hour to prepare a room for them." "I'll check the rooms." "Just one is fine." Ruskin laughed. "Is that your revenge for showing up unannounced?"

Sherlock had just enough time to realize something was wrong before he found himself with a very real knife at his throat. He held up his hands in surrender. Over the years he'd been subject to all manner of Mycroft's surprise attacks, enough to recognize when he meant business. "Mycroft..." he said slowly. "It's me." "But who are 'you' exactly?" Mycroft asked. “Your resemblance is so convincing that I thought at first this was some sudden leap in maturity on your part, but now I'm certain—you aren't my brother any more than your fiancé is who he claims to be." Sherlock sucked in a breath. He had anticipated that Mycroft might be suspicious of him, but he hadn't expected it would extend to William as well.

Thank you so much! I love these two so much and I like the ghost realm best of all the realms in TGCF, so yes, I’ll probably explore that a bit because I intend to spend most of this longfic in just Ghost City. The main focus of this will revolve around cooking, though:
BWX gambles Xie Lian away as a bride to Ghost King Hua Cheng as what he thinks will be a new form of torment. Instead, Hua Cheng wins the love of his life...who promptly tells him he doesn't want to marry but will work off the debt at Paradise Manor honorably instead. Except none of the staff are willing to take him. Enter San Lang, a young member of Hua Cheng's staff who doesn't actually seem to have a job himself but is at least willing to help Xie Lian figure out what he might do to work off his debt-cooking...for ghosts?! (XL has some serious doubts that this is a good idea) A somewhat Bed and Breakfast for Spirits / somewhat God of Stars AU

Time moved differently in the ghost realm and was tricky to tell given that the sky never changed. Even still, the time between when Xie Lian returned to the kitchen and when San Lang finally found him there seemed to drag on forever as he paced, and shooed curious ghosts away, and laid his head on the counter despairingly, and shooed curious ghosts away again. He didn't dare cook anything and kept the exterior door firmly closed, but the missing connecting door to Paradise Manor was a real problem. Hours must have surely passed before he heard a muffled "Gege?" and the tables he had finally nailed together and used to block the doorway shifted forward just enough for San Lang to peek through. "May I come in?" San Lang asked softly, but Xie Lian was already prying back the tables to make room for him. Xie Lian shoved the tables back against the opening once he was through, already seeing many ghostly heads peeking in from behind him, and when he turned San Lang was watching him with raised eyebrows. "Gege's so strong!" Xie Lian laughed wetly, the tears he hadn't been able to cry earlier finally springing to his eyes at the sound of a friendly voice. "Are you okay?!" San Lang's voice was tight with alarm and Xie Lian tried to nod his head reassuringly,

He wasn't one to believe in prophetic dreams, but there had to be a reason his mind had chosen this as the stage for their final confrontation. The idea that it might be random didn't fit.

"And how should I call you, dear customer?" Xie Lian asked. The ghost fire flickered uncertainly. "I don't remember my name, and I've no money to be a customer." "Hmm..." Xie Lian thought. "How about being my taste tester then?" "Taste tester???" "En. There's another ghost who usually tries things for me, but he's not here yet this evening. I would be honored if you could fill in during his absence." "Can I even eat?" The little fire asked. Xie Lian blinked. Could ghost fires eat? He wasn't sure. "Let's find out, shall we?" he said, tilting his head with an apologetic smile. He scooped out a small portion of the broth he had been stirring, surprised to find it had congealed into more of a stew, and blew across it carefully to cool it before holding it out in offering. The little ghost fire hesitated for a moment, bouncing around before finally settling just above the ladle. Whether it sipped with an unseen mouth or simply absorbed the food, when it bounced away the ladle was empty.

Even though I’m using a title inspired by YOI, I don’t find retelling the same story to be rewarding ever so there are similarities where I can fit them but it’s definitely not going to be the same late story banquet reveal. #WIPSnips
William's mouth pressed in a thin line. He knew exactly who was to blame, Sherlock was certain. "It would have had to be someone who heard our conversation at the banquet..." Sherlock prompted. "That could be quite a number of people. You aren't exactly quiet, you realize." Sherlock laughed. And then abruptly stopped laughing, painfully aware of how the sound cut through the quiet of the mansion. Pfft. Mansion. What was he even doing here? He shouldn't have come. "Ahh...apologies." He unlocked his phone and opened the rail app. "I'll just find a train back." "You can't." "No, it's fine, there's still seats available on the 21:50 train." Sherlock blanched at the cost and the additional length of time it would take to get back to Kings Cross. This was going to be an expensive lesson for his already thin finances. At this rate he wouldn't make rent this month and really would need—NO. There was no way he was asking Mycroft for any— "If you leave, how am I going to coach you?" William asked quietly. Sherlock blinked, looking up from his phone to find William looking at him intently. “...what."

His stance was loose, movements fluid, a mix of several fighting styles. As he watched them, William stripped the leaves from a shorter, thicker branch. Albert had always been skilled with knives in the past. Not as much as Louis, but perhaps the same might be true here. "Albert—catch!!" William tossed the small branch over just as Albert was beginning to lose his footing. Albert stumbled a moment, but caught it mid-air, immediately slashing forward as he held Sherlock's sword at bay. "Liam!! Whose side are you on?!" Sherlock yelled, leaping back.

A short ride later and Sherlock eyes the mound of dresses in the dressmaker's arms. "A few," he says flatly. Irene blanches. "You can't expect me to buy off-the-rack? Sherly! Just because you run about in shirtsleeves!" She laughs and disappears into the fitting area in a flurry of skirts, letting the dressmaker's assistants help if only because all the girls dashing about makes Sherlock look uncomfortable. While the dress Miss Hudson begrudgingly loaned her technically fits, Irene is relieved to shrug out of its close-tucked princess form and into her much preferred shirtwaist and skirt style, wide puffed sleeves allowing for freedom of movement more like her stage costumes. Layers of fabric and small adjustments later, Irene emerges in a cheerful yellow floral pattern with intricate white lace detailing to find Sherlock planted on one of the shop's chairs, knees drawn to his chest and shoes pressing inelegantly into the cushion, unlit cigarette dangling from his mouth. "Well?" Irene turns in a slow circle to let him admire. "Well, what?" "What do you think of this dress?" "It looks expensive." Irene rolls her eyes. "I suppose it does when you're the one footing the bill. I need opinions, Sherly."

The one I chose here is weird. No real name, it *could* stand on its own as a ~1k short story. Originally I wrote it for deduction practice simply to see how detailed I could get. #WIPSnips
"The more recent owners of this ring have had jobs doing manual labor, which has paid well enough to provide for them until very recently. But even still they are not entirely destitute." Sherlock slapped his knee, delighted, grin so infectious that William felt the corners of his own mouth lifting. "The age and style of the ring is older," William continued, "and you can see from two lines inside that the ring has been resized at least twice-one is so faint that it was obviously done by a master craftsman, but the other adjustment was made by someone less skilled. And those two lines are almost obscured by scratches from having been worn on a chain. There are scratches on the outside of the ring as well, but mostly on the underside. Did I miss anything?" William asked. "There's a stone missing." "Oh, yes, but I thought that was obvious. There is only one stone missing of the three-recently pawned out of necessity. But the need was not so great as to pawn the other stones or the ring in entirety. My guess is they were hoping to secure enough funds to buy the stone back when the chain they were wearing it on suddenly broke and the ring was lost. Only shortly before you found it, seeing as only one of the prongs of the missing stone has bent inward." By this point, Sherlock had melted onto the chair across from him, head propped on one elbow dreamily. William blushed.

William was off the ice and by his side instantly, plucking the bag from his hands and sitting down next to him on the bench. "Ahh, how thoughtful. I forgot to even grab a protein bar before I left..." he left off the rest of that sentence. No one needed to know just how long he had been here sorting through his feelings. And Fred should be here any moment. He opened to bag from Louis, stomach rumbling, and stopped short. "Oh." The bag had two thermoses in it—one with a note in Louis's handwriting that read "Coffee for the manchild." William blushed and quickly crushed the note in his hand. "He sent something for you as well."

Sherlock woke at 5 am, changed into his training clothes, threw his backpack with his skates and other necessities over his shoulder and made his way downstairs. He could tell William was an early riser and he didn't want to disappoint on day one. Already he could hear the sounds of the mansion waking, could smell breakfast cooking. Perhaps if he ate a protein bar and was ready quickly enough, he and William could jog to the rink together. Rounding the corner into the kitchen, Sherlock sing-songed, "Good morning, Will—“ Wide red eyes shot up-the wrong red eyes. "—L-Louis. Hi." Louis grunted a reply, returning his focus to the eggs he had cooking on the stove. Without raising his gaze, Louis gestured to covered dishes on the counter nearby. "Brother expected you would be up early and asked me to prepare something suitable." Sherlock blinked. "…Thanks?" He uncovered them and found a generous helping of omelette with sausage, a bowl of apple slices, and another bowl of oatmeal, still steaming hot. "All of this is for me?" he asked. Louis smirked. "You're going to need your strength to keep up." "With William?" Not bothering to move to the dining room, Sherlock tucked in while standing at the counter. "With both of us. I'm not losing to you either, Holmes—regardless of who is coaching you."

As it turned out, William had very little affinity for magic-yet another difference between him and the original William, who had been lazy about studying magic but gifted in spite of it. He still had enough of the original William's memories to know what magic should feel like flowing through his body, could still remember being able to mold giant dolls out of the earth and move them to do his bidding—namely, terrorizing the staff and Louis both. Not having such destructive power was a relief. Not being able to prove it to anyone else was more complicated. "I don't understand it," Lord Moriarty said to the third magic tutor he had brought in to asses William that week. "Could a blow to the head have caused this?" The tutor shook his head. "There's no precedent for it. Are you absolutely certain he had Earth Magic abilities before? Even if his powers had been sealed, I ought to sense something from him. But there's nothing."

"That's quite the sharp-looking cane," Sherlock says pointedly. Dear god, this detective notices entirely too much. He's going pick their entire plan to pieces if they spend any more time with him. "Thank you—it's an antique. I figure if I'm going to inherit the family bad knees I may as well look fancy doing it." "You didn't have that on the Noahtic." "And you didn't have that bulge in your pocket..." William murmurs, "...or are you just happy to see me?" Louis chokes. Sherlock grins, flashing the small piece hidden under his jacket and William raises an eyebrow. "You really think this case will be that dangerous?" Sherlock shrugs. "Could be. The Baskerville estate is large-both in land and fortune, which is something most legacy estates don't have these days."

"Oh my," William said, breaking the silence. Lord Enders sprang to his feet, gesturing wildly. "This isn't—he attacked—I couldn't—" "Oh, an intruder?" William suggested. "YES! Yes! This man followed me back from the lounge. I thought I'd get rid of him if I came back to my rooms, but when I opened my door he attacked me!" William nodded along, bending down by Michaelson's body and pretending to poke at it as though seeing a corpse for the first time. Only one stab wound, knife still plunged straight into the chest cavity between the ribs, no hesitation marks. Leaving the blade in had minimized blood flow outside the body, leaving the floor beneath unscathed. Honestly impressive. Possibly indicative that Enders's hunts weren't purely long range with rifles. He was either very experienced or extremely lucky. ...You believe me, don't you??" Enders's voice shook. William rose to his feet. "Of course," he replied. "You're a respected member of the House of Lords-I would never doubt your word." Enders's shoulders relaxed at that. "That said..." William continued, "this is international waters... foreigners might not have the same... understanding as we do..." Enders's eyes widened and he began to pace the room not unlike the caged animals upstairs. "You'll vouch for me, won't you?" he begged.

*This ending* is why Red Thread, my #yuumori dream walking AU, haunts me.

It was an incomplete plan even when I wrote it, doesn’t work, I lowkey hate it, and it writes me into a corner I haven’t found my way out of in 3+ years.
William scrabbled against the handcuff on his wrist, eyes panicked. "Holmes! You truly are the devil here! You are ruining the plan!" Sherlock stood up over the corpse and plunged the sword through the torso in the same way he had just pretended to do to William. "The plan where I watch you die?" he asked angrily. "Or the one where I kill you myself?" Sherlock heaved the body up, maneuvering it into a semi-standing position, facing him. "Either way I live with that regret, that guilt, for the rest of my life?" He tested the motion of the corpse-still a bit stiff from rigor mortis but not overly so...good...fitted behind the knees were slats of flexible wood fastened above and below to make them appear standing and not dragging. The head was fastened to the shoulders and a long slab that ran down the spine to held everything upright in a similar manner. Like a marionette. He had never had the ability to test any of this full scale, of course, but so far it seemed his theories held true. The fastenings and wood should snap upon impact with the river and be long gone before the body washed ashore. The one thing he hadn't quite accounted for was the dead weight. He's an impressive agent... Patterson had thought when Bonde slipped Arthurton's secret ledger to him as they passed on the stairs. Nerves of steel. Thinks on his feet. When Bonde had bragged that not even the palace vault could deter him, Patterson had thought it hyperbole. But now he understood. Of course he would win the esteem of Him. So when he turned up not a week after the final conclusion of the Ripper case, Patterson knew it was important. A message, perhaps. New orders. During his promotion, Patterson had vowed to serve the people, with honestly and integrity unlike his predecessor. And he would. Other loyalties notwithstanding. Patterson hid his surprise with a hand in front of his face, pushing his spectacles up with his middle finger. "Did he send you?" he murmured. That cocky grin peeked out from underneath the shadow of his policeman's hat. "Will? Not at all. I just stopped by to ask you to dinner." He's an impressive agent…..but bloody mad.
