I think the GOP thought they could slip this one by because they don’t have name recognition but it’s biting them in the ass. He is also anti abortion which always seems to translate into losing votes.

I feel it’s important to remember that Benjamin Netanyahu bolstered Hamas as a divide and conquer tactic against the PA to halt the movement towards an independent Palestinian state. A move that even the IDF felt was counter productive towards state security.
